59Maintenance Instructions CHECKING/SERVICINGCHECKING/SERVICINGDANGERTo prevent accidental starting of the en-gine when servicing or adjusting the ma-chine, remove the key from the ignitionswitch and disconnect the spark plugwires.Security of Air Cleaner SystemNOTE: The following inspection is only an exter-nal inspection and should be done without “dis-turbing” the filtration components. On a daily basis, visually inspect the external condition of the complete air cleaner system. The following items should be inspected:1. Check the Cummins/Fleetguard OptiAir™ aircleaner canister for damage. Make sure thecover is in place and the cover latch is secure—do not run the engine without the air cleanercover in place and secure.2. Inspect the air intake hose (into the engine) forcracks, nicks, cuts, etc., and check the hoseclamps for tightness.3. Check to make sure the air filter restrictiongauge is in place and securely mounted on theair cleaner housing.BatteryNOTE: For initial battery service during setup, referto Battery Service in Assembly Instructions.IMPORTANT: Make sure battery is securely mounted in the frame. A loose battery may cause damageto the case resulting in acid leakage and severedamage to the machine. A hazard may be createdby damage to critical working parts and safety systems.CAUTIONImportant Battery Service, Installation, andCharging Tips for Electronic Fuel InjectionEngines:● Do not allow the battery cables to touchopposing terminals. When connectingbattery cables attach the positive (+)cable to positive (+) battery terminalfirst, followed by negative (-) cable tonegative (-) battery terminal.● Never start the engine when the cablesare loose or poorly connected to thebattery terminals.● Never disconnect battery while engineis running.● Never use a quick battery charger tostart the engine.● Never “jump start” the engine usinganother source. Electricity fluctua-tions can damage the ECU (ElectronicControl Unit).● Always disconnect negative (-) batterycable lead before charging battery, andalso unplug harness from ECU beforeperforming any welding on equipment.Electrolyte LevelThe battery electrolyte level should be checked af-ter every 25 hours of operation. To check electrolyte level:1. Remove battery cell filler caps.2. Check the electrolyte level. If the level is belowthe bottom of the vent well, fill with distilled water to the bottom of the vent wells [1/4 to 1/2 in.(6 to 13 mm) above the plates].3. Replace filler caps.IMPORTANT: DO NOT overfill the battery. Electrolyte will overflow through the vented caps onto partsof the machine and WILL result in severe corrosion.
