Before attempting to start the engine, makesure the Forward Speed Control (FSC) rockerswitch is in NEUTRAL-PARK position, and theblade clutch and parking brake areDISENGAGED.2. Turn the ignition key to the RUN position. Movethe throttle/choke lever into the CHOKE position.NOTE: The choke may not be required if theengine is warm.3. Make sure you have secure footing and pullthe recoil starter handle toward you.IMPORTANT: If the engine fails to start afterapproximately 5 attempts, the engine and safetyswitch circuit should be checked before any fur-ther attempts. Turn the key to the OFF posi-tion to begin these checks.4. After the engine starts, gradually move thethrottle/choke lever to the THROTTLE position, keeping enough choke on to allow the engineto run smoothly as it warms up. As soon aspossible, move the lever past the detent intothe THROTTLE position.IMPORTANT: Make sure the choke is in theOFF position during normal engine operation;running with the choke in the ON position CANdamage the engine.ADJUSTING GROUND SPEED AND STEERINGIMPORTANT: If the DSD52 Mower deck isinstalled on the tractor, make sure the dollywheel is retracted BEFORE moving.CAUTIONBefore operating the mower, read and un-derstand all Safety Instructions and Operat-ing Instructions.WARNINGNEVER run the engine in an enclosed orpoorly ventilated area. Engine exhaustcontains carbon monoxide, an odorlessand deadly gas.ONOFFCAUTIONA safety interlock switch system PRE-VENTS CRANKING the engine with eitherthe Forward Speed Control or the bladeclutch (PTO) out of neutral. If the enginecranks otherwise, the safety system is notworking and should be repaired or ad-justed before operating the mower. DONOT disconnect safety switches; they arefor the operator’s protection.CAUTIONLearn to START, STOP, and MANEUVERthe mower in a large, open area.If the operator has not operated a machinewith DUAL TRANSAXLES or PISTOLGRIPS, steering and ground operationshould be learned and practiced until theoperator is completely comfortable han-dling the machine BEFORE ATTEMPTINGTO MOW.
