Maintenance Instructions CLEANING36CLEANINGEngine Air Cleaner SystemThere are two components in the engine air cleanersystem: a foam prefilter element and a paper ele-ment. Each component is checked, cleaned andmaintained on a different schedule based on the fil-tering action required. Each component is servicedas follows:Engine Air Cleaner Foam and Paper ElementFoam Precleaner ElementClean and inspect the foam element after every 25hours of service and replace the element yearly (orwhen dirty or damaged). Wash the element in de-tergent and water; and dry it thoroughly. More fre-quent cleaning may be required when operating inextremely dusty conditions.Paper Precleaner ElementInspect the paper element after every 50 hours ofservice and replace the element every 200 hours(or when dirty or damaged). More frequent replace-ment may be required when operating in extremelydusty conditions.Be careful to reinstall the foam element and the pa-per element into the air cleaner case. Carefully re-install the air cleaner cover into the air cleaner bodyby putting the hooks on the bottom of the air cleanercover into the air cleaner body bottom.Engine Cooling SystemAir Intake ScreenBefore each use, check that the air intake (rotary)screen is free from grass and debris and clean ifnecessary.Engine Cooling FinsEvery 100 hours, check and clean the cooling finsand inside of engine shrouds to remove grass, chaffor dirt clogging the cooling system and causingoverheating. When cleaning, remove the recoilstarter and the fan housing.Grass Buildup in Mower Housing1. Raise the deck lock lever handle on each sideof the carrier frame and pull out to release car-rier frame for tilting action.2. Using the carrier frame lift handle, raise deck tothe TILT-UP position and insert the deck hookinto the tilt-up latch on the tractor body.3. Clean grass buildup underneath the deck usinga pressure washer (and scraper if required).NOTE: While some degree of material buildupin the mower deck housing can be tolerated, apoint is finally reached where cutting qualitydeteriorates and clogging begins to occurbecause of too much buildup on the baffling andhousing.4. Lower the deck to the normal operating positionand reengage the deck lock levers.PaperElement FoamElementDANGERBefore raising or removing the mowerdeck for cleaning, stop the engine, re-move the ignition key, and disconnect thespark plug wires.DANGERDo not operate the mower with deck in tilt-up position. Do not move the tractor withthe deck in the tilt-up position.CAUTIONNEVER operate the cutter blades with thedeck in the raised position.
