Check blade balance by positioning the bladehorizontally on a blade balancer or use a nail orshaft through the center hole. If either end of theblade rotates downward, grind (remove) metalon that end until the blade will balance. Theblade is properly balanced when neither enddrops. Balance of a blade is generally main-tained by removing an equal amount of materialfrom each end of the blade when sharpening.Blade Balanced on MagneticWall-Mounted Balancer7. Mount the blade with wing tips pointing up intothe housing. Reinstall the blade, washer, lockwasher, and nut. Tighten the nut to 60 ft-lb(81.3 N⋅m).Drive BeltsLook under the body and inspect the condition of thetwo (2) belts every 25 hours of operation - enginePTO drive, and ground drive belt. If the belts showsigns of cracking or deteriorating, the beltsshould be replaced. Refer to REPLACING/RE-PAIRING the Drive Belts in this section.Mower Deck Gearbox Oil SealsThe mower deck gearbox seals and gaskets shouldbe inspected every 25 hours for evidence of oilleaking; particularly the lower oil seal on the bladedrive gearbox. This seal is protected by the trashguard on the blade hub and seal protector plate onthe housing, but is still vulnerable to seal damagedue to operating in an adverse environment. Themower blade must be removed for inspection of theseal, so it is recommended to inspect the gearboxseals when blades are removed for sharpening. If an oil leak is noted, the seal should be replacedand the gearbox assembly relubricated. Refer toMower Deck Gearbox Lubrication in this section.Spark PlugsEvery 100 hours, remove the spark plugs, inspect, clean, and reset the gap (or replace with newplugs). Clean spark plugs with a wire brush. If theelectrodes are burned short or pitted, replace theplug (refer to Specifications for the proper type ofreplacement plug). Check the spark plug gap with awire-type feeler gauge and set the gap to 0.030 in.(0.75 mm). Reinstall and tighten to 16 ft-lb (22 N·m).Fuel Lines and ClampsEvery year, inspect the fuel supply line from the tankto engine for deterioration or damage. Also, inspectthe fuel line clamps for tightness. Good preventivemaintenance calls for complete replacement of fuellines and clamps every two (2) years.30°Do Not Grind orSharpen on UndersideSharpen atOriginal 30° AngleIntersectionWear AreaWingTipBlade Balancer
