D o w n l o a d i n g F o n t sC h a p t e r 4 : U s i n g F o n t sv 4-13Whether you do or do not use additional fonts, it is helpful toknow a few facts about how the printer uses fonts eitherresident in the printer or downloaded (transferred) from thehost. Each time you specify a font in a document to be printed, thefont is downloaded to printer, unless the font is already:• Resident in the printer’s ROM (read-only memory)—PCLonly.• Specified in the printer driver as permanentlydownloaded to the printer’s internal memory—PCL only.• Installed on the PostScript card—PostScript only.• Installed on a font card—PCL only.Consult your software application’s user documentation fora discussion of fonts associated with that application.Temporary fonts are PCL fonts downloaded for a particularprint job. As soon as the print job is finished, the fonts arecleared from memory. They must be downloaded for eachprint job that uses them. Downloading may have an impacton performance, depending on the number of fonts beingdownloaded. As a result, the print job using downloadedfonts may take longer than one using resident fonts. As an example, when you print a mostly-text document in aresident font, printing time is optimal. If you print that same document using a downloaded font, thetime to print the first page is substantially longer than it wasfor your resident-font document. The remaining pages alsotake longer to print than those of the resident-font document.DownloadingFontsTemporary andPermanent FontsAUG-CH04 Page 13 Black,Cyan Saturday, January 21, 1995 6:33 PM
