FTA-720 OperATing MAnuAl44FIeld programmIng modeThe FTA-720’s “Book” Memories also allow the userto store, label, and recall channel frequencies which youmay want to use frequently by placing the FTA-720 intothe “Field Programming mode.”Memory Storage Press and hold in both the PTT switch and key,while turning the radio on, to activate the Field Pro-gramming Mode. “FD” will appear at the upper leftcorner on the display. Select the desired frequency to be stored in theBook Memory. Press and hold in the key for 2 seconds. Thedisplay will indicate a “Book” memory channelnumber will blink on the LCD. Within five seconds of releasing the key, rotatethe DIAL selector knob to select the desired mem-ory channel number for storage. In order to preventwriting over memory channels, a “ ” icon willappear at the right of the channel number to indicateif the memory channel is vacant. Now press and hold in the key for 3 seconds;you will now see the blinking “A” character on theLCD. To attach an alpha/numeric name (label) tothe memory, proceed to the next step; otherwisepress and hold in the key for 2 seconds to savethe entry and exit. To label a memory with an alpha/numeric name, thenext step is to use the DIAL selector knob to selectany of the 125 available characters (including let-ters, numbers, and special symbols). Press thekey repeatedly to recall the desired letter, number,and symbol in the first charactor slot (a . 0 A a ...). When the desired first character appears,press the key momentarily to select it and moveon to the next character. Select succeeding characters in the same manner,pressing the key momentarily after each selec-tion. After entering the entire name (eight charactersmaximum), press the key for 2 seconds to saveall data for the channel. Turn the radio off, then turn the radio back on againto begin normal operation.
