MOTORCYCLE CARE AND STORAGE1-31stored.Long-termBefore storing your motorcycle for severalmonths:1. Follow all the instructions in the “CARE” onpage 1-29.2. Fill up the fuel tank and add fuel stabilizer (ifavailable) to prevent the fuel tank from rustingand the fuel from deteriorating.3. Perform the following steps to protect the cyl-inder, piston rings, etc. from corrosion.a. Remove the spark plug cap and sparkplug.b. Pour a teaspoonful of engine oil into thespark plug bore.c. Install the spark plug cap onto the sparkplug, and then place the spark plug on thecylinder head so that the electrodes aregrounded. (This will limit sparking duringthe next step.)d. Turn the engine over several times withthe starter. (This will coat the cylinder wallwith oil.)e. Remove the spark plug cap from the sparkplug, and then install the spark plug andthe spark plug cap. WARNING! To pre-vent damage or injury from sparking,make sure to ground the spark plugelectrodes while turning the engineover.4. Lubricate all control cables and the pivotingpoints of all levers and pedals as well as ofthe sidestand/centerstand.5. Check and, if necessary, correct the tire airpressure, and then lift the motorcycle so thatboth of its wheels are off the ground. Alterna-tively, turn the wheels a little every month inorder to prevent the tires from becoming de-graded in one spot.6. Cover the muffler outlet with a plastic bag toprevent moisture from entering it.7. Remove the battery and fully charge it. Storeit in a cool, dry place and charge it once amonth. Do not store the battery in an exces-sively cold or warm place [less than 0 C (32F) or more than 65 C (149 F)].
