ENGINE OPERATION42 YM Series Operation ManualIf the Engine Fails to StartBefore pushing the start switch again, besure to confirm that the engine hasstopped completely. If an attempt to restartis made while the engine is running, thepinion gear of the starter motor will bedamaged.NOTICENever hold for longer than 15 seconds orthe starter motor will overheat.Never attempt to restart the engine if theengine has not stopped completely. Piniongear and starter motor damage will occur.Note: Push and hold the start switchfor a maximum of 15 seconds. Ifthe engine does not start the firsttime, wait for about 15 secondsbefore trying again.NOTICEIf the vessel is equipped with a water lift(water lock) muffler, excessive crankingcould cause seawater to enter thecylinders and damage the engine. If theengine does not start after cranking for 15seconds, close the thru-hull water intakevalve to avoid filling the muffler with water.Crank for 10 seconds at a time until theengine starts. When the engine does start, stop the engine immediately and turn offthe power switch. Be sure to re-open theseacock and restart the engine. Operatethe engine normally.Air Bleeding the Fuel System AfterStarting FailureIf the engine does not start after severalattempts, there may be air in the fuelsystem. If air is in the fuel system, fuelcannot reach the fuel injection pump.Bleed the air out of the system. SeeBleeding the Fuel System on page 30.Starting at Low TemperaturesComply with local environmentalrequirements. Use engine heaters to avoidstarting problems and white smoke. Do notuse starting aids.NOTICENever use an engine starting aid such asether. Engine damage will result. To limit white smoke, run the engine at lowspeed and under moderate load until theengine reaches normal operatingtemperature. A light load on a cold engineprovides better combustion and fasterengine warm-up than no load.Avoid running the engine at idling speedany longer than necessary.
