The automatic allocation of networkparameters to hosts eases the administrative burden of maintaining an IP network. Thesystem complies with the DHCP specifications documented in RFC 2131. DHCP bydefault, which allows the system connected to the network to become operational byobtaining IP addresses and additional network parameters from the DHCP server.DHCP OptionDHCP provides a framework for passing information to TCP/IP network devices. Networkand other control information are carried in tagged data items that are stored in theoptions field of the DHCP message. The data items themselves are also called options.DHCP can be initiated by simply connecting the system to the network. The systembroadcasts DISCOVER messages to request network information carried in DHCPoptions. The DHCP server responds with the specific values in the correspondingoptions. The following table lists the common DHCP options supported by the system.Parameter DHCP Option DescriptionSubnet Mask 1 Specifies the client‘s subnet mask.Time Offset 2Specifies the offset of the client's subnet inseconds from Coordinated Universal Time(UTC).Router 3 Specifies a list of IP addresses for routers onthe client‘s subnet.Time Server 4 Specifies a list of time servers available to theclient.Domain NameServer 6 Specifies a list of domain name serversavailable to the client.Log Server 7 Specifies a list of MIT-LCS UDP serversavailable to the client.Host Name 12 Specifies the name of the client.
