Route the ground wire 12” below finished grade by the shortest and most direct route tothe AC power ground system (MGN) of the customer’s premise free of any sharp bends.(See the Section 5.3.4.4, “Alternative Grounding Method” on page 33 if MGN is notavailable).9. Attach the 12 AWG ground wire to the side of the subscriber’s premise with stainlesssteel half moon clamps or tie-wrap the ground to the riser conduit of the buried fiber cabledrop. When using tie-wraps wait until the Local Power Source (LPS) wire run has beeninstalled and tie-wrap both the ground wire and the LPS wire run to the riser conduit ofthe Buried Fiber drop.10. Clean the MGN connector with emery cloth to insure a stable connection.11. Coat the connection with a metal corrosion preventative.12. Connect the ground wire to the ground lug and tighten.13. Attach a Warning Ground Tag to this grounding connection.5.3.4.4 Alternative Grounding MethodThis section describes an alternative grounding method if MGN is not available.Article 800-11c of the National Electrical Code (NEC) states for the purpose of grounding thepoint of entry for communications wiring and cables should be within 20 feet (6.1 meters) ofthe electrical service entry point. Where this is impractical, a separate grounding electrodeshould be installed in compliance with Article 800-40-(b)(3) and bonded in compliance withArticle 800-40(c) and (d).Briefly stated:■ A copper clad steel ground rod should be driven into the earth at least 8 feet (2.4 meters)deep.■ An Earth Resistance Megger Test Set is utilized to determine the resistance of the earthelectrode. The NEC requires this ground rod conduction to earth to be no more than 25ohms of resistance. If 25 ohms cannot be achieved with a single electrode (ground rod),a secondary electrode must be used and bonded to the primary electrode using a 12 AWGcopper ground wire.■ The secondary electrode must be spaced at least 8 feet (2.4 meters) from the primaryelectrode.Ground BarGround WireRubber Grommet
