Section 7: Setting Up - UNIXAXIS 540/640 User’s Manual 85Using SNMP for Remote MonitoringYou may use SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) forremote monitoring of the AXIS 540/640. All major functionsapplicable to print servers are supported.General Information SNMP actually refers to a set of standards for network management, including a protocol, a database structure specification, and a set ofdata objects. The AXIS 540/640 SNMP implementation runs in theTCP/IP environment. The actual management is handled by an NMS (NetworkManagement System) software running on a host on your network. The NMS software communicates with network devices by the meansof messages, which are references to one or more objects.A message can be a question or an instruction to a device, or an alarmtriggered by a specific event in a device. Objects are contained in databases called MIBs (Management Information Base), where MIB-II is astandard database. The AXIS 540/640 supports all relevant parts of MIB-II. It alsoincludes a private enterprise MIB. The AXIS MIB is described later inthis section.
