96 Magellan™ 8300/8400Integrating the Scanner With Your Host SystemYour scanner MUST be equipped with the correct hardware (inter-face board, cable, etc.) to properly communicate with your host sys-tem. Contact your dealer for information if you have questionsabout your scanner’s hardware compatibility. You may also want to contact the dealer or your system administra-tor if you have no record of how your scanner was pre-programmedat the factory. Scanners are typically programmed with the defaultsettings for specific interface types (see Appendix F, FactoryDefaults, for more information); however, your scanner may havebeen custom configured with settings that are unique to your com-pany or application.Once you know the scanner’s current settings, you can determinewhat changes will be required to allow communication with yourhost system and/or optional features you choose to modify to cus-tomize your installation. After recording the modifications needed, finish reading this chapter, then turn to the appropriate page andfollow the instructions to program the scanner. When all scanner features are programmed to your satisfaction, thescanner is ready to be placed into operation.Customizing Your Scanner’s OperationMost scanner programming falls within three general categories:• General Scanner Features on page 106 — are features com-mon to all interface types. Examples include beeper adjust-ments such as volume and length, read verification settings, etc.• EAS Features on page 146 — control the settings for interfac-ing with the [optional] EAS device.• Interface Related Features on page 148 — are the mandatorysettings necessary to allow communication with your host ter-minal. Examples of these settings are: RS-232 baud rate andparity.CAUTIONIt is possible, via programming bar codes, to change the interface type(for example: from RS-232 to IBM Port 17). Great care should be takento select the correct interface type, since you can cause damage to thescanner and/or POS terminal by attempting to change to an incompat-ible interface. ALWAYS make interface selections with the host cableDISCONNECTED.
