Installing Drives in the External Bays 8-105A header connector is usually keyed by the omission of oneof its pins with the corresponding hole filled in on the cableconnector, as shown in Figure 8-5.DC Power CablesFigure 8-6 identifies the types of DC power cables comingfrom the computer’s power supply. Before connecting adrive to a power cable, refer to Figure 8-6 to identify the cor-rect cable connector to use for the drive.Figure 8-6. DC Power Cable ConnectorsInstalling Drives in the ExternalBaysThe external drive bays (Figure 8-7) can hold up to threehalf-height devices. A diskette drive is standard in the topbay and a CD-ROM drive is standard in the middle bay. Thelower bay can be used for a SCSI drive or a drive thatrequires its own controller card and interface cable, such assome kinds of tape drives.Figure 8-7. Drives in the External BaysCAUTION: When connecting an interface cable, match the colored strip to the pin-1 end of theconnector. Reversing the cable prevents the drivefrom operating and could damage the controller, the drive, or both.system boardconnector5.25-inch driveconnector3.5-inch driveconnectorsystem boardconnectordrive in top baydrive in middle bayempty lower baypress(two places)
