46 Configuring the PowerConnect 3324/3348 Switchw w w . d e l l . c o m | s u p p o r t . d e l l . c o mOther Configuration RequirementsThe following is required for downloading embedded software and configuring the device:• ASCII terminal (or emulation) connected to the Serial port in the back of the unit.• Assigned IP address for PowerConnect 3324/3348 for device remote control using withTelnet, SSH, etc.NOTE: The configuration process defines only one port.Booting the DeviceWhen power is turned on with the local terminal already connected, a device goes throughPOST (Power On Self Test). This built-in power-on test runs every time the device isinitialized. The POST checks hardware components to determine if the device is fullyoperational before completing boot up.If a critical problem is detected, the program flow stops. If POST passes successfully, thecode is decompressed into the RAM memory. The POST messages are displayed on the terminal and indicate test success or failure. To boot the device:1 Ensure the ASCII cable is connected to the terminal.2 Connect the power supply to the device; the device begins booting up. The boot-uptest first counts the device memory availability and then continues to boot-up. Thefollowing screen is an example of the displayed POST test:------ Performing the Power-On Self Test (POST) ------UART Channel Loopback Test......PASSTesting the System Cache.......PASSTesting the System SDRAM.......PASSBoot1 Checksum Test........PASSBoot2 Checksum Test........PASSFlash Image Validation Test......PASSTesting CPU PCI Bus Device Configuration...PASS
