3-6 Dell Workstation Mini Tower Systems User’s GuideReserved MemoryReserved Memory allows you to designate a region ofsystem board memory that can be supplied by an expan-sion card. You should not enable the reserved memoryfeature unless you are using an expansion card thatrequires special addressing. For example, you may have a memory expansion cardthat needs to be addressed starting at 15 MB. Selectingthe 15M-16M option in the Reserved Memory categoryspecifies that only part of the base memory comes fromthe dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs) on the sys-tem board, whereas the base memory from 15 MB to16 MB comes from the memory expansion card. The Reserved Memory category has the followingoptions:• None (the default option)• 15M-16M• 512K-640KCPU SpeedCPU Speed indicates the processor speed at which yoursystem boots.Press the left- or right-arrow key to toggle the CPUSpeed category between the processor’s rated speed (thedefault) and a lower compatibility speed, which lets youaccommodate speed-sensitive application programs.Num LockNum Lock determines whether your system boots withthe Num Lock mode activated on 101- or 102-keykeyboards.When Num Lock mode is activated, the rightmost bankof keys on your keyboard provides the mathematical andnumeric functions shown at the tops of the keys. WhenNum Lock mode is turned off, each key provides thecursor-control function (if any) indicated at the bottom ofthe key.Keyboard ErrorsKeyboard Errors enables or disables reporting of key-board errors during the POST, which is a series of teststhat the system performs on the hardware each time youturn on the system or press the reset button. This category is useful when applied to self-starting serv-ers or host systems that do not have a permanentlyattached keyboard. In these situations, selecting Do NotReport suppresses all error messages relating to the key-board or to the keyboard controller during POST. Thisoption does not affect the operation of the keyboarditself, if one is attached to the computer.System PasswordSystem Password displays the current status of your sys-tem’s password security feature and allows you to assignand verify a new password. No one can assign a newpassword unless the current status is Not Enabled, whichis displayed in bright characters. The options for the System Password category are:• Not Enabled (the default option)• Enabled• Disabled By JumperNOTE: Read “Using the System Password Feature”found later in this chapter for detailed instructions onassigning a system password and using or changing anexisting system password. See “Disabling a ForgottenPassword” found later in this chapter for instructions ondisabling a forgotten system password.Password StatusPassword Status provides an extra measure of systemsecurity by letting you set the system password to Lockedor Unlocked.Using Password Status With a SystemPassword EnabledWhen this category is Unlocked, any user who alreadyknows the system password can disable the password atsystem start-up by using the option dis-played on the screen—thus (inadvertently or not) leavingthe system without password protection.
