9-10 Dell Workstation Mini Tower Systems User’s Guide13. Enter the System Setup program, and update theappropriate Drive category (0 or 1) under Drives:Primary.See “Drives: Primary and Secondary” in Chapter 3.After you update the System Setup settings, rebootthe system.14. Partition and logically format your drive, asdescribed in the next subsection, before proceed-ing to the next step.15. Test the hard-disk drive by running the Hard-Disk Drive(s) Test Group in the Dell Diagnostics.See your Diagnostics and Troubleshooting Guide forinformation on running the diskette-based diagnos-tics and troubleshooting any problems that mayoccur.16. Install your operating system on the hard-diskdrive.Refer to the documentation that came with youroperating system.Partitioning and Logically FormattingYour EIDE Hard-Disk DriveEIDE hard-disk drives must be physically formatted, par-titioned, and logically formatted before they can be usedto store data. Every hard-disk drive from Dell is physi-cally formatted before it is sent to you.NOTE: When using the Windows NT operating systemwith the FAT 16 file system, the primary partition foreach hard-disk drive can be no larger than 2 GB.Extended partitions can be larger than 2 GB, but eachlogical drive within an extended partition must be nolarger than 2 GB.To partition and logically format your hard-disk drive, use the program(s) offered by your operating system.Installing SCSI DevicesTo use SCSI devices in your Dell computer, you musthave a SCSI host adapter card, which comes with its ownSCSI cable. This cable can be used to attach a variety ofSCSI devices (hard-disk drives, tape drives, and so on).The SCSI host adapter configures the devices attached toit as one subsystem—not as independent devices.Although SCSI devices are installed essentially the sameway as other devices, their configuration requirementsare different.SCSI Configuration GuidelinesFor details on configuring your SCSI subsystem, refer tothe documentation that came with your SCSI devicesand/or your host adapter card. The following subsectionsoffer some general guidelines.SCSI ID NumbersEach device attached to a SCSI host adapter card, as wellas the card itself, must have a unique SCSI identification(ID) number from 0 to 7. When SCSI devices are shippedfrom Dell, the default SCSI ID numbers are assigned asfollows:• A SCSI host adapter card is configured as SCSI ID 7.• A SCSI tape drive or digital audio tape (DAT) driveis configured as SCSI ID 6.• A SCSI CD-ROM drive is configured as SCSI ID 5.• SCSI hard-disk drives are usually configured asSCSI ID 0. (The drive used to boot your systemshould always be configured as SCSI ID 0.)NOTE: There is no requirement that SCSI ID numbers beassigned sequentially or that devices be attached to thecable in order by ID number.SCSI Cable and SCSI TerminationThe type of cabling you receive with your SCSI devicedepends on the type of device you are installing.• If you are installing an internal narrow SCSI device(such as a CD-ROM drive or tape drive), you have a50-pin internal SCSI cable as shown in Figure 9-14.One end of this cable attaches to the SCSI hostadapter. The three connectors on the other end of thecable are used for attaching up to three narrow SCSIdevices installed in the externally accessible drivebays.
