www.desatech.com 109889-01B14CONNECTING TO GAS SUPPLYWARNING: This appliancerequires a 3/8" NPT (NationalPipe Thread) inlet connection tothe pressure regulator.WARNING: A qualified serviceperson must connect heater to gassupply. Follow all local codes.WARNING: Never connectnatural gas heater to private (non-utility) gas wells. This gas is com-monly known as wellhead gas.CAUTION: Never connectpropane/LP heater directly to thepropane/LP supply. This heaterrequires an external regulator(not supplied). Install the exter-nal regulator between the heaterand propane/LP supply.IMPORTANT: Check gas line pressure before con-necting heater to gas line. Gas line pressure must beno greater than 14 inches of water. If gas line pressureis higher, heater regulator damage could occur. For propane/LP gas only, the installer must supplyan external regulator. The external regulator willreduce incoming gas pressure. You must reduceincoming gas pressure to between 11 and 14 inchesof water. If you do not reduce incoming gas pres-sure, heater regulator damage could occur. Installexternal regulator with the vent pointing downas shown in Figure 18. Pointing the vent downprotects it from freezing rain or sleet.INSTALLATIONContinuedPropane/LPSupply Tank ExternalRegulatorFigure 18 - External Regulator with VentPointing Down (Propane/LP Only)VentPointingDownCAUTION: Use only new, black iron or steel pipe. Inter-nally-tinned copper tubing maybe used in certain areas. Checkyour local codes. Use pipe of1/2" or greater diameter to allowproper gas volume to heater. Ifpipe is too small, undue loss ofvolume will occur.Installation must include an equipment shutoffvalve, union and plugged 1/8" NPT tap. LocateNPT tap within reach for test gauge hook up. NPTtap must be upstream from heater (see Figure 19,page 15).IMPORTANT: Install equipment shutoff valvein an accessible location. The equipment shutoffvalve is for turning on or shutting off the gas tothe appliance.Check your building codes for any special re-quirements for locating equipment shutoff valveto heater.Apply pipe joint sealant lightly to male NPTthreads. This will prevent excess sealant fromgoing into pipe. Excess sealant in pipe could resultin clogged heater valves.WARNING: Use pipe jointsealant that is resistant to liquidpetroleum (LP) gas.We recommend that you install a sediment trap insupply line as shown in Figure 19, page 15. Locatesediment trap where it is within reach for cleaning.Install in piping system between fuel supply andheater. Locate sediment trap where trapped matteris not likely to freeze. A sediment trap traps moistureand contaminants. This keeps them from going intoheater controls. If sediment trap is not installed or isinstalled wrong, heater may not run properly.IMPORTANT: Hold pressure regulator with wrenchwhen connecting it to gas piping and/or fittings.
