This appliance has a pilot which must belighted by hand. When lighting the pilot,follow these instructions exactly.B. BEFORE LIGHTING smell all around theappliance area for gas. Be sure to smell nextto the floor because some gas is heavier thanair and will settle on the floor.WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS• Do not try to light any appliance.• Do not touch any electric switch; do notuse any phone in your building.• Immediately call your gas supplier froma neighborʼs phone. Follow the gassupplierʼs instructions.• If you cannot reach your gas supplier, callthe fire department.C. Use only your hand to push in or turn thegas control knob. Never use tools. If theknob will not push in or turn by hand, donʼttry to repair it, call a qualified service tech-nician or gas supplier. Force or attemptedrepair may result in a fire or explosion.D. Do not use this appliance if any part hasbeen under water. Immediately call aqualified service technician to inspect theappliance and to replace any part of thecontrol system and any gas control whichhas been under water.LIGHTINGINSTRUCTIONS1. STOP! Read the safety information above.2. Make sure equipment shutoff valve isfully open.3. Turn control knob clockwise to theOFF position.4. Wait five (5) minutes to clear out any gas.Then smell for gas, including near the floor.If you smell gas, STOP! Follow “B” in thesafety information above. If you donʼt smellgas, go to the next step.EquipmentShutoffValveEquipmentShutoff ValvePRESSURE TESTING HEATER GASCONNECTIONS1. Open equipment shutoff valve (see Figure 20,page 15).2. Open main gas valve located on or near gasmeter for natural gas or open propane/LPsupply tank valve for propane/LP gas.3. Make sure control knob of heater is in the OFFposition.4. Check all joints from equipment shutoff valveto thermostat gas valve (see Figure 21 or 22).Apply a noncorrosive leak detection fluid togas joints. Bubbles forming show a leak.5. Correct all leaks at once.6. Light heater (see Operating Heater). Checkall other internal joints for leaks.7. Turn off heater (see To Turn Off Gas to Appli-ance, page 17).8. Replace front panel.
