In addition, themodem must be programmed with the Call Out telephone numbers in order to operatethe Remote Notification option.To configure the modem, connect the serial port of a standard PC computer tothe modem through the serial cable. Run a terminal emulation program on the computer.Test the connection to the modem by typing [A], [T] and [ENTER]. The modem shouldrespond with either OK" or 0" (zero). If the modem does not respond, consult themodem manufacturer’s manual to confirm your setup. If the modem still does notrespond, then seek technical assistance from your modem manufacturer.After connection, perform Basic Modem Configuration" and the remaining sections of thischapter.8.4.1 Basic Modem ConfigurationThe basic modem should be a plug and play type. All setup is done by the UPS. Only theinitial phone number needs to be entered by the user.8.4.2 Configuring the Modem to Call a Remote ComputerTo configure the modem to call a remote computer, perform the following procedure:NOTE The brackets ([ ]) in the following steps indicate characters that require keying inprior to pressing [ENTER].1. Connect the modem to the PC through the serial port as described in the modemmanufacturer’s manual.2. Key in [A], [T], then press [ENTER].3. Confirm that the modem responds with OK" or 0" (zero).NOTE In Steps 4 and 5, the xxxxxxx" is the phone number of a remote computer. Thephone number should include all local line and long distance access numbers needed todial out. This number is limited to 32 characters. Placing a T" at the beginning of thenumber informs the modem to use tone dialing. For example, use 9" if needed for anoutside line, 1" for long distance + (Area Code) + Number or whatever access codes areneeded to dial the call directly. Add a ," in the number anywhere that a delay isneeded. This will cause a one-second delay. More than one delay may be added to thenumber; for example, enter AT&Z0=T,9,,1 (Area Code) (Phone Number)".4. To program a group one number, key in [A], [T], [&], [Z], [0] (zero), [=], [T], [,],[xxxxxxx], then press [ENTER].5. To program a group two number, key in [A], [T], [&], [Z], [1], [=], [T], [,], [xxxxxxx],then press [ENTER].
