VT Compartment Front Cover Assembly8.5 Safety featuresEaton’s VacClad-W switchgear is manufactured with several built-ininterlocks These interlocks are intended to protect persons workingon the equipment Never make these interlocks inoperative Doingso can damage property and cause severe injuryThe following are two of the interlocks:Coding platesA coding plate is fastened to the bottom front edge of the breakercompartment There is also a coding plate fastened to the front ofthe breaker If the breaker has a lower interrupting rating than therating of the compartment, or if the voltage and continuous currentcharacteristics don’t match, the coding plate onthe compartment will prevent the entrance of the breakerinto the compartmentotee:N Even with the coding plates it is possible to put into the compartmenta breaker whose control wiring is not coordinated with that of the compart-ment Always check the shop order drawing to make sure that the controlwiring of the breaker and the compartment are the sameAutomatic shutterAn automatic shutter, shown in Figure 25, covers the primarydisconnecting contacts when the breaker is withdrawn from theoperating position The shutter prevents persons who are workingon the switchgear from accidentally touching the primary contactsA roller on the breaker raises the shutter when the breaker islevered into the connected position When the breaker is leveredout, the shutter closes by spring action Each shutter can bepadlocked in the closed or open position manually (see Figure 26) CAUTIONDO NOT MANUALLY RAISE OR REMOVE SHUTTER UNLESS PRIMARYCONTACTS ARE DE-ENERGIZED AND SAFETY PROCEDURES HAVE BEENINITIATED TO MAKE SURE THE CIRCUIT CAN NOT BE RE-ENERGIZED.FAILURE TO EXERCISE CAUTION MAY RESULT IN BODILY INJURY ANDPROPERTY DAMAGE.
