(You do not need to connect the transponder to the GPSMAP695/696’s Data Out pin.) Then, set the corresponding RS-232 output configurationon the transponder to REMOTE + TIS and set the GPSMAP 695/696’s Serial DataFormat to TIS In or TIS In/NMEA & VHF Out (refer to the Interfacing section). The followingare the Proprietary Sentences for NMEA 0183, version 3.01 output: PGRME, PGRMZ,PGRMM, and PGRMH.The GPSMAP 695/696 also includes NMEA input with support for the BWC, DBT,DPT, MTW, VHW, VTG, and XTE sentences.Garmin’s proprietary communication protocol is available from the Web site (www.garmin.com).GENERAl INTERFACE SETUPThe Interface Setup controls the input/output format used when connecting the unitto external devices.Selecting an interface:1) Press the MENU Key twice to select the Main Menu.2) Turn or move the FMS Joystick to select ‘System Setup’, and press the ENTKey.3) Turn or move the FMS Joystick to select ‘Interface’, and press the ENT Key.4) With the Serial Data Format field highlighted, turn the FMS Joystick toselect the desired Serial Data Format.
