3Starting UpInstalling the BatteriesThe eTrex Legend operates on two AA batteries(not included), which are located in the back of the unit.Rechargeable Alkaline, NiCad orLithium batteries may also be used.Stored data will not be lost whenthe batteries are removed.To install batteries:1. Remove the battery cover on theback of the unit by turning the D-ring1/4 turn counter-clockwise.2. Insert the batteriesobserving properpolarity as shownat the right.3. Reinstall the batterycover by turning theD-ring 1/4 turnclockwise. Battery CoverD-ringBattery CompartmentImportant Note:When replacing batteries, useonly new or fully recharged bat-teries and do not mix Alkaline,NiCad or Lithium batteries.Remove the batteries from theunit if you don’t plan to use itfor several months.Follow the battery manufactur-er’s instructions for proper careand disposal of used batteries.In a typical use scenario, bat-tery life will be up to 15 hours.Extensive use of backlightingwill reduce this time.Using ‘Battery Saver’ or ‘UseWith GPS Off’ mode when notnavigating can increase batterylife up to 18 hours.Starting Up Your eTrex LegendTo start up the eTrex Legend, take the unit outsideand find an open area where the built-in antenna has aclear view of the sky. Hold the unit at a comfortable heightwith the antenna pointing up. Press and hold the POWERbutton to turn the unit on. You will see the Welcome Page.Press the PAGE button to acknowledge the copyright andwarning messages and move to the Satellite Page.F NOTE: When you use the unit for the firsttime. It may take up to five minutes to findyour location. After that, it will take about15 to 45 seconds to locate your position.BatteryInstallationGetting StartedWhen a sufficient number of satellites have beenlocated the window at the top of the page will display a“Ready to Navigate” message.
