Basic OperationOnce the input source, speaker andantenna connections have been made, and the system has been configured, thereceiver is ready for operation. Note thatsome controls are duplicated on both thefront panel and the remote control, whileothers appear on one or the other, but notboth.Power SwitchTo turn the AVR75 on for the first time, press the front panel Power button 1.When you press the Power button notethat the LED indicator surrounding theswitch will momentarily turn red, thengreen indicating that the unit has beenturned on. If the unit is connected to a TVset a brief status report (see figure #6) ofthe AVR75’s settings will momentarilyappear.Once the unit has been turned on withthe front panel switch it may then beplaced in a Standby mode for future useusing the Main Power On c buttonon the remote. Note that the remotepower will NOT operate unless thePower button has first been manuallydepressed. When the AVR75 is turned off usingthe remote control it is placed in aSTANDBY mode, and the Standby LEDsurrounding the Power switch willilluminate in amber. The AVR75 maybe turned on by pressing either theMain Power On button c or any ofthe Source buttons on the front panel24578)!.NOTE: When the AVR75 is in the Standbymode, and the amber LED around thePower switch is illuminated, it is NOTdisconnected from the AC main power. To turn the AVR75 totally off, press andrelease the Power button 1 until theLED surrounding the switch goes out.Source SelectionTo select or change the input source, press one of the Source buttons onthe front panel 24578)!or one of the Source buttons on theremote d.Each time the source is changed amessage (see figure #7) will appearbriefly if the on-screen display is activatedconfirming the new selection. To listen to one source while you watchanother, first select the video source, andthen select the desired audio source.NOTE: When the unit is in “Standby”mode, pressing any of the source buttonswill turn on the unit. The video source will be shown next tothe word VISUAL in the VisualIndicator P in the InformationDisplay ı. The audio source, whichmay be the same or different than thevideo source will always be shown in theMain Information Display J.Volume ControlThe AVR75’s volume is controlled usingeither the front panel Volume knob Ùor the Volume buttons o on theremote. If the volume control is set too high,a speaker overload may activate theunit’s protective circuitry. This will cutthe output to the speakers and changethe LED surrounding the power switchto a red color. To clear the problem, turnthe unit off for a few seconds, and lowerthe volume before turning it back on. Ifthe problem re-occurs, turn the unit offand consult your dealer or an authorizedservice center for advice.NOTE: Unlike conventional mechanicallydriven volume controls, this receiver’svolume is set using digital devices. Thismeans that the volume knob has no firmstopping point at either end of its rotation.Depending on the speed with which theknob is turned, it is normal for as manyas three complete rotations to be requiredfor full travel from the loudest setting tothe softest. When the volume is adjusted the changewill be indicated by an on-screen display(see figure #8). The word MASTER willalso appear in the main portion of theInformation Display ı, followed bya two-digit number. The number indi-cates the variation from the referencepoint established when the output levelsare set.Surround Mode SelectionOne of the most important features ofthe AVR75 is its ability to reproduce a fullmultichannel surround soundfield fromDolby Digital sources, analog matrixsurround encoded programs, and stan-dard stereo programs. In all a total ofseven listening modes are available.Selection of a surround mode is basedon personal taste, as well as the type ofprogram source material being used. For example, motion pictures bearingthe logo of one of the major surroundencoding processes, such as DolbyDigital, Dolby Surround, DTS† Stereo orUltraStereo††may be played in either theDolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic or MovieSurround depending on the sourcematerial. TV or radio broadcasts ofprograms in surround should normallybe played back in the Dolby Pro Logic orMovie Surround modes. Other modeselections are described elsewhere inthis manual.21
