Basic OperationNOTE: Once a program has been encodedwith surround information, it retains thesurround matrix as long as the programis broadcast in stereo. Thus, movies withsurround sound will carry surroundinformation when they are broadcast viaconventional TV stations, cable, pay TVand satellite transmission. In addition, agrowing number of made-for-televisionprograms, sports broadcasts, radio dramasand music CDs are also recorded insurround sound. You may obtain a list ofthese programs and discs from the DolbyLaboratories web site at www.dolby.comSurround modes may be selected in oneof three ways.From the front panel, use the Mode ⁄or Mode ¤ buttons @ to scrollthrough the list of modes. The selectedmode will appear in large letters in thefront panel display, and in a two-linereminder on the video screen. Once theselection is made, the mode will continueto appear in a smaller indicator B atthe bottom of the front panel display(see figure 9).From the remote, modes may be selectedby simply pressing the button y thatcorresponds to the desired mode.Modes may also be selected using theon-screen display. Press Select j onthe remote to display the MAIN MENU.Then press ¤ i so that the on-screencursor is next to SURROUND MODE.Press Select j again to move to thenext menu.At the Surround Mode Menu, press the‹ or › buttons i until the desiredmode name appears on the screen. Press¤ until the on-screen cursor > is nextto RETURN TO MAIN MENU andpress Select j. At the main menuselect MENU OFF and press Select jto exit the menus.A different mode may be selected foraudio and video sources. Once a modehas been selected, it will be attached tothose sources in memory. Thus, youmay select PRO LOGIC as the mode forone video source and HALL for another.After the initial selections are made, theunit will automatically return to yourpreferred mode for each type of inputwhenever it is chosen.Digital Audio SourcesWhen the source is connected to theAVR75 and playing digital audio infor-mation, first select it using the frontpanel or remote input selectors, and thenpress the appropriate digital input usingthe Digital Input Selectors g 9 onthe remote or front panel. Depending onthe type of digital source in use, theAC-3 indicator A will light when aDolby Digital signal is present, or thePCM indicator Q will light when astandard two-channel S/P-DIF-typedigital signal is present.Once a Dolby Digital signal is detectedthe unit will automatically switch to theDolby Digital mode. When a PCM digitalsource is detected you may select any ofthe surround modes except Dolby Digital.NOTE: The Dolby Digital mode shouldnot be selected when PCM digital oranalog signals are present. If the DolbyDigital mode is selected when an AC-3signal is not detected, the AVR75 willdefault to the STEREO mode.For information on using Digital AudioSources, see the Advanced Featuressection of this manual.IMPORTANT NOTE: Many peopleincorrectly presume that sound shouldalways be heard from the surroundchannels. In reality, it is normal forthe surround channels to operate occa-sionally, and often to be silent. Moviedirectors and sound mixers typicallyuse these channels only when needed tocreate an effect or establish ambience.Artificially increasing the volume levelto the surround channels may destroythe illusion of surround audio and addunwanted noise to your system.Tuner OperationThe AM/FM tuner is extremely flexible,and offers a number of options. Thefollowing instructions will enable youto take advantage of the tuner’s manyfeatures.To select tuner operation, press theAM/FM button 2 on the front panel,or the remote h. Press the button againto select the desired frequency band ifrequired.Up/down tuning is accessible by pressingthe Tune button Ò on the front paneleither up ⁄ or down ¤ or the‚ TUNE /SEARCH —buttons s on the remote. Pressingthese buttons once increases or decreasesthe station frequency by one step.Holding the buttons down quickly scansfor the next station. Holding the tunebuttons for a few seconds and then re-leasing them will change the tuner to thenext station with an acceptable signal.22
