There is no need to adjust thesesettings when configuring subsequent inputs.Speaker SetupThis menu tells the AVR 8000 which typeof speakers are in use. This is important asit adjusts the settings that decide whetheryour system should use the “5-channel” or“6-channel/7-channel” modes, as well asdetermining which speakers receive low-frequency (bass) information. For each of these settings, use the LARGEsetting if the speakers for a particular positionare traditional full-range loudspeakers that arecapable of reproducing sounds below 100Hz.Use the SMALL setting for smaller, frequency-limited satellite speakers that do not reproducesounds below 100Hz. Note that when “small”speakers are used, a subwoofer is required toreproduce low-frequency sounds. Rememberthat the “large” and “small” descriptionsdo not refer to the actual physical size ofthe speakers, but to their ability to reproducelow-frequency sounds. If you are in doubt asto which category describes your speakers, consult the specifications in the speakers’owner’s manual, or ask your dealer. After the selections are made for theIN/OUT SETUP menu options, press the⁄/¤ Buttons mp, so that the cursormoves to the BACK TO MASTERMENU line and press the Set Button o.It is easiest to enter the proper settings for thespeaker setup through the SPEAKERSETUP menu (Figure 3). At this point, press the Set Button o to bring up theSPEAKER SETUP menu (Figure 3).Figure 3The first line of the SPEAKER SETUPmenu allows you to configure the AVR eitherfor standard 5.1 surround operation or foradvanced 6.1/7.1 operation. Note that in orderto take advantage of the 6.1/7.1 modes youmust have speakers placed at the rear of theroom through connections to an optional, exter-nal amplifier connected to the Surround BackPreamp Outputs ‚. If you do not have theseadditional speakers installed, leave the setting atthe factory default of 5.1 and proceed to thenext step by pressing the ¤ Button p tobegin setting the speaker configuration process. If your system does include rear surroundamplification and speakers, change this settingby pressing the Set Button o while thecursor is at the CH CONFIG line, and thenpress the ‹ or › Buttons n so that6.1/7.1 is highlighted. When the setting iscomplete, press the ⁄ or ¤ Buttons mpto move to the LEFT/RIGHT line to beginthe speaker configuration process.NOTE: The CH CONFIG setting establishesthe surround mode options for the AVR so thatonly the correct modes for the number of speak-ers in your specific system will be available.Should you add rear surround speakers to yoursystem at a later date, it is important to changethis setting so that advanced surround modessuch as Logic 7/7.1, THX Surround EX andDTS-ES will be available.Once the correct channel configuration settinghas been established, begin the speaker setupprocess by making certain that the cursor ispointing toward the LEFT/RIGHT line, which sets the configuration for the front leftand right speakers. If you choose this option andthere is no subwoofer connected, you will nothear low-frequency sounds from the centerchannel speaker. When LARGE is selected, a full-range outputwill be sent to the center speaker output, andNO center channel signal will be sent to thesubwoofer output.NOTE: If you choose Logic 7 as the surroundmode for the particular input source forwhich you are configuring your speakers, theAVR 8000 will not make the LARGE optionavailable for the center speaker. This is due tothe requirements of Logic 7 processing, anddoes not indicate a problem with your receiver. When NONE is selected, no signals will besent to the center channel output. The receiverwill operate in a “phantom” center channelmode and center channel information willbe sent to the left and right front channeloutputs. When only front left and right speakersare used, with no center or surround speakers,VMAx is a good alternative mode.393939* S P E A K E R S E T U P *C H C O N F I G : 5 . 1 6 . 1 / 7 . 1L E F T / R I G H T : S M A L LC E N T E R : S M A L LS U R R O U N D : S M A L LS U R R B A C K : S M A L LS U B W O O F E R : S U B ( L F E )X - O V E R F R E Q : 8 0 H Z T H XB A C K T O M A S T E R M E N U39293929
