24 SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONSystem ConfigurationIn the 5.1 configuration you may select theLogic 7/5.1 Music, Cinema or Enhanced modes. They work best with two-channel music, sur-round-encoded programs or standard two-channel programming of any type, respectively. For 6.1/7.1 configurations the Music andCinema modes may be selected. Note that theLogic 7 modes are not available when eitherDolby Digital or DTS Digital soundtracks are inuse. See pages 28 and 29 for a complete expla-nation of the DSP Surround modes. On the DSP (SURR) menu, the selectionchoices made with the ‹/› Buttons non the remote select from one of the DSP sur-round modes that are designed for use withtwo-channel stereo programs to create a varietyof sound field presentations. The choices avail-able are Hall 1, Hall 2, Theater, VMAx Near andVMAx Far. The Hall and Theater modes aredesigned for multichannel installations, whilethe two VMAx modes are optimized for use indelivering a full surround field when only thefront left and front right speakers are installed.See pages 28 and 29 for a complete explana-tion of the DSP surround modes. On the STEREO menu, the selection choicesmade with the ‹/› Buttons n on theremote may either turn the surround processingoff for a traditional two-channel stereo presen-tation, or select 5 Stereo or 7Stereo depending on whether the 5.1 or6.1/7.1 output is in use. The latter modes feeda two-channel presentation to all speakers, regardless of the number of speakers in use.See page 29 for a complete explanation of the5 Stereo and 7 Stereo modes. After the selections are made on the Dolby,DTS, Logic 7, DSP (Surround) or Stereo menus, press the ⁄/¤ Buttons mp so that thecursor moves to the BACK TO MASTERMENU line and press the Set Button o.Delay SettingsDue to the different distances between thelistening position for the front channel speakersand the surround speakers, the amount of timeit takes for sound to reach your ears from thefront versus surround speakers differs. You maycompensate for this difference through the useof the delay settings to adjust the timing forthe speaker placement and acoustic conditionsin your listening room or home theater. The AVR 8000’s advanced software enables youto quickly and easily set delay times withoutthe need to calculate them using a complex for-mula. Instead, all you need to do is measurethe approximate distance between your listen-ing position and each of the speakers in yoursystem. When you enter those distances intothe AVR’s memory as shown below, the AVR’smicroprocessor does the rest of the work, calcu-lating the proper delay time. Note that themeasurements need not be accurate to theinch, as the system is designed to accommo-date a typical listening area rather than requirethe precise measurement to one “sweet spot”position.Due to the differences between the way eachsurround mode operates, some modes allowfor a greater range of delay times than others. To avoid problems, we recommend that delaytimes be adjusted using the Dolby Digital mode.If a different mode is selected at a later time, the AVR 8000 will automatically restrict thedelay settings to those required by the surroundmode in use.To set the delay time for a specific input, the DELAY ADJUST menu (Figure 7)should be visible on your on-screen display. Ifthe system is not already at that point, pressthe OSD Button v to bring up the MAS-TER MENU, press the ¤ Button p threetimes or until the on-screen › cursor is pointingat the DELAY ADJUST line. Press theSet Button o to call up the menu.Figure 7Once the DELAY ADJUST menu is onyour screen note that the default setting is toenter the distances from the speakers to the lis-tening position is in feet. If your measurementsare in feet, proceed to the next step; if yourmeasurements are made in meters, press thethe ¤ Button p until the on-screen › cur-sor is at the UNIT line on the menu. Then, press the ‹/› Buttons n so thatMETER is highlighted. When the change inmeasurement units is made, press the ⁄/¤Buttons mp to return the › cursor tothe FL position. With the on-screen › cursor pointing to FL,press the ⁄/¤ Buttons mp until thedistance to the front left speaker is entered.Press the ¤ Button p to move down tothe center speaker, and use the ⁄/¤ Buttonsmp again to enter the distance. Repeat theprocedure until the correct distance is enteredfor each speaker position by pressing the ¤Button p to select the speaker and the⁄/¤ Buttons mp to enter the distance. In order, the speaker positions are: Front Left,Center, Front Right, Surround Right, SurroundBack Right, Surround Back Left, Surround Leftand Subwoofer.Note that when the system is configured for5.1 operation in the CH CONFIG line onthe SPEAKER SETUP menu as shownon page 21, no entry is needed for the SBRand SBL speakers, as they are not present.Similarly, if you have entered NONE forthe Center or Surround positions on theSPEAKER SETUP menu, as shown onpage 21, no entry will be possible or neededfor that position. When the speaker-to-listening position distancehas been entered for all active speaker positions, press the ⁄/¤ Buttons mp until the on-screen cursor is next to BACK TO MASTERMENU and press the Set Button o.Note that the delay settings may be changedat any time directly from the remote controlby pressing the Delay Button .FL SPEAKER DELAY will appear inthe Lower Display Line B, but you maypress the ⁄/¤ Buttons mp to selectany of the individual speaker positions.Press the Set Button o when the desiredspeaker position appears, and then press that⁄/¤ Buttons mp again to enter the dis-tance from the speaker to the listening position.Press the Set Button o again to enter thedata. You may then press the ⁄/¤ Buttonsmp to select another speaker position torepeat the procedure as needed, or wait fiveseconds for the system to return to normaloperation.Output Level AdjustmentOutput level adjustment is a key part of theconfiguration of any surround sound product. It is particularly important for a digital receiversuch as the AVR 8000, as correct outputsensure that you hear sound tracks with theproper directionality and intensity.3839* D E L A Y A D J U S T *F L : 1 0 F T S B R : 1 0 F TC E N : 1 0 F T S B L : 1 0 F TF R : 1 0 F T S L : 3 F TS R : 3 F T S U B : 1 2 F TU N I T : F E E T M E T E RB A C K T O M A S T E R M E N U3939
