30 OPERATIONOperationBasic OperationOnce you have completed the initial setup andconfiguration of the AVR 8000, it is simple tooperate and enjoy. The following instructions willhelp you maximize the enjoyment of your newreceiver:Turning the AVR 8000 On or Off• When using the AVR 8000 for the first time,you must press the Main Power Switch 1on the front panel to turn the unit on. This placesthe unit in a Standby mode, as indicated by theamber color of the Power Indicator 3. Oncethe unit is in Standby, you may begin a listeningsession by pressing the System Power Control2 on the front panel, or the Power On Buttond or AVR Selector f on the remote. Notethat the Power Indicator 3 will turn green.This will turn the unit on and return it to theinput source that was last used. The unit may alsobe turned on from Standby by pressing any of theInput Selector Buttons efg∫ç∂ on the remote or the Input SourceSelector Button % on the front panel.NOTE: After pressing one of the Input SelectorButtons eg to turn the unit on, pressthe AVR Selector f to set the remote controlto the AVR 8000 functions.To turn the unit off at the end of a listeningsession, simply press the System PowerControl 2 on the front panel or the PowerOff Button aå on the remote. Power willbe shut off to any equipment plugged into therear panel Switched AC Outlet ‡ and thePower Indicator 3 will turn amber.When the remote is used to turn the unit “off”it is actually placing the system in a Standbymode, as indicated by the amber color of thePower Indicator 3.• To program the AVR 8000 for automatic turn-off, press the Sleep Button i on the remote.Each press of the button will decrease the timebefore shut-down in the following sequence:The sleep time will be displayed in the LowerDisplay Line B and it will count down untilthe time has elapsed.When the programmed sleep time has elapsed,the unit will automatically turn off. Note thatthe front panel display will dim to one halfbrightness when the Sleep function isprogrammed. To cancel the Sleep function,press and hold the Sleep Buttoni untilthe information display returns to normalbrightness; the Sleep indicator numbers willdisappear and the words SLEEP OFFwill appear in the Lower Display Line B.When you will be away from home for anextended period of time it is always a goodidea to completely turn the unit off with thefront panel Main Power Switch 1.NOTE: All preset memories are lost if the unit isleft turned off by using the Main PowerSwitch 1 for more than two weeks.Source Selection• To select a source, press any of the InputSelector Buttons eg ç∂ on theremote.• The input source may also be changed bypressing the front panel Input SourceSelector Button %. Each press of the buttonwill move the input selection through the list ofavailable inputs.• As the input is changed, the AVR 8000 willautomatically switch to the digital input (ifselected), surround mode, speaker configura-tion, output levels, crossover frequency andnight mode status that were entered during theconfiguration process for that source.• The front panel Video 5 Inputs , OpticalDigital 4 Input & or the Coaxial Digital 4Input ( may be used to connect a device suchas a video game or camcorder to your homeentertainment system on a temporary basis.• As the input source is changed, the new inputname will appear momentarily as an on-screendisplay in the lower third of the video display.The input name will also appear in the MainInformation Display ˆ and a green LEDwill light next to the selected input’s name inthe front-panel Input Indicators ı.• When an audio source is selected, the lastvideo input used remains routed to the Video 1/Video 2 Outputs and Video MonitorOutputs . This permits simultaneous viewingand listening to different sources.• When a composite or S-Video source is selected,the video signal for that input will be routed to theVideo Monitor Output and will be viewableon a TV monitor connected to the AVR 8000.Volume Control• Adjust the volume to a comfortable levelusing the front panel Volume Control Ù orremote Volume Up/Down buttons.• To temporarily silence all speaker outputs,press the Mute Button K . This willinterrupt the output to all speakers and theheadphone jack, but it will not affect anyrecording or dubbing that may be in progress.When the system is muted, the word MUTEwill flash in the Main Information Displayˆ. Press the Mute Buttons K again toreturn to normal operation.• During a listening session, you may turn thetone controls for the front left/right speakers offor adjust the bass and treble settings usingremote control, rather than the front panelknobs used on many audio products. To adjustthe tone settings, first press the Tone ModeButton . The first press of this buttonshows if the tone controls are active or not.When the default setting of TONE INappears, press the ⁄/¤ Buttons mp sothat TONE OUT appears on the LowerDisplay Line B and in the semi-OSD display.To adjust the Bass or Treble settings, press theTone Mode Button until the currentBass or Treble status appears in the LowerDisplay Line B and then press the ⁄/¤Buttons mp to raise or lower the settings.When all tone mode adjustments are complete,simply wait a few seconds until the displayreturns to normal operation as your indicationthat the settings have been accepted by the AVR’smemory. Note that the tone controls only changethe output for the front left/right speakers.• For private listening, plug the 1/4" stereophone plug from a pair of stereo headphonesinto the front panel Headphone Jack 4.Note that when the headphone’s plug is con-nected, the word HEADPHONE will scrollonce across the Lower Display Line B andall speakers will be silenced. When the head-phone plug is removed, the audio feed to thespeakers will be restored.Surround Mode SelectionOne of the most important features of theAVR 8000 is its ability to reproduce a fullmultichannel surround sound field from digitalsources, analog matrix surround-encodedprograms and standard stereo programs.Selection of a surround mode is based on per-sonal taste, as well as the type of programsource material being used.
