System ConfigurationWhen all audio, video and system con-nections have been made, there are a fewconfiguration adjustments to be made. Afew minutes spent to correctly configureand calibrate the unit will greatly add toyour listening experience.Speaker Selection and PlacementThe placement of speakers in a multichannel home theater system can havea noticeable impact on the quality ofsound reproduced. For Home THX opera-tion it is recommended that the speakerscarry the certification mark of LucasfilmLtd.’s Home THX Division. However, withcareful selection and placement, theAVR80II will deliver accurate reproduc-tion with any high quality speakers. No matter which type or brand of speak-ers are used, the same model or brand ofspeaker should be used for the front left, center and right speakers. This creates aseamless front soundstage, and elimi-nates the possibility of distracting sonicdisturbances that occur when a soundmoves across mis-matched front channelspeakers. For the most accurate and excitingreproduction of bass frequencies a sepa-rate subwoofer should be used. WhenTHX Certified front channel speakers areused, a separate subwoofer is mandatory,as THX front and center speakers are notdesigned for extreme low frequencies. The AVR80II may be used with eitherconventional (point source) surroundspeakers or with THX Certified diffusesurround speakers. No adjustment isneeded to select the type of surroundspeaker used.Speaker PlacementDepending on the type of center channelspeaker in use and your viewing device, place the center speaker directly above orbelow your TV or in the center behind aperforated front projection screen.Once the center channel speaker isinstalled, position the left and right frontspeakers so that they are as far awayfrom one another as the center channelspeaker is from the preferred listeningposition. Ideally, the front channelspeakers should be placed so that theirtweeters are no more than 24” off centerform the tweeter in the center channelspeaker.Depending on the specifics of your roomacoustics and the type of speakers in use,you may find that imaging is improvedby moving the front left and right speak-ers slightly forward of the center channelspeaker.
