Multiroom OperationThe AVR80II is unique among A/Vreceivers in that it is equipped to operateas the control center for a sophisticatedmultiroom operation with accessories assimple as a remote IR sensor or assophisticated as a specialized externalamplifier and a special version of theworld-famous AudioAccess wall mountedkeypad controls. Although some multi-room installations will require the ser-vices of a specially trained installer, it ispossible for the average do it yourselfhobbyist to install a simple remote roomsystem. For additional information onusing the AVR80II in multiroom installa-tions we suggest that you contact yourdealer or custom installer.InstallationThe key to remote room operation is tolink the remote room to the AVR80II’slocation with wire for an infrared receiv-er and speakers or an amplifier.IR LinkThe remote room IR receiver should beconnected to the AVR80II via standardcoaxial cable. Plug the IR connectioncable into the mini jack inside the Multiarea in the middle of the AVR80II’s rearpanel.œIf other Harman Kardon compatiblesource equipment is part of the mainroom installation, the REMOTE CONT.OUT jack on the rear panel ∑ shouldbe connected to IR IN jack on the CDplayer or cassette deck. This will enablethe remote room location to controlsource equipment functions as well asthe remote room input and volume.NOTE: All remotely controlled compo-nents must be linked together in a daisychain. Connect the IR OUT jack of oneunit to the IR IN of the next to establishthis chain.Audio LinkDepending on the distance from theAVR80II to the remote room, two optionsare available. The preferred method is to run highquality, shielded audio interconnectcable from the AVR80II’s location to theremote room. At the remote room, con-nect the interconnect cable to a stereopower amplifier. The amplifier will beconnected to the room’s speakers. No vol-ume control is required, as the AVR80IIand the remote IR link will provide thatfunction. At the AVR80II, plug the audiointerconnect cable into the MULTI OUTjacks ® at the top left corner of theAVR80II’s rear panel.NOTE: The remote power amplifier musthave signal sensing capability or be lefton constantly to assure automatic opera-tion at the remote room.As an alternative, the amplifier may beplaced at the same location as theAVR80II, with a standard audio intercon-nect between the two. Speaker wiresshould then be run to the remote room.High quality AWG-12 speaker wire is pre-ferred.IMPORTANT NOTE: Any cables runinside walls should be CL3/FT4 rated, orcarry any other certification that isrequired by the NEC, NFPA or state andlocal building and electrical codes. Toavoid interference, audio and speakercables should not be parallel to, or inthe same conduits with AC cables. If youhave any questions about multi-roomwiring consult your dealer, custominstaller or a licensed contractor orelectrician.Set-upOnce the equipment connections havebeen made, the AVR80II needs to be con-figured for multiroom operation by fol-lowing these steps:1.
