If you are instructed to return the system board, follow all packaginginstructions, and use any packaging materials for shipping that are suppliedto you.Replacing the system boardBefore you replace the system board from the server, take the following steps tosave data, firmware, and configuration data:v Record all system configuration information, such as IMM IP addresses, vitalproduct data, and the machine type, model number, serial number, UniversallyUnique Identifier, and asset tag of the server.v Using the Advanced Settings Utility (ASU), save the system configuration toexternal media.v Save the system-event log to external media.Note:1. When you replace the system board, you must either update the server withthe latest firmware or restore the pre-existing firmware that the customerprovides on a diskette or CD image. Make sure that you have the latestfirmware or a copy of the pre-existing firmware before you proceed.2. Before you replace the system board, make sure that you backup any featureson demand (FoD) keys that were enabled. Remember to re-enable the featureson demand (FoD) keys after installing the new system board. For moreinformation on Features on Demand (FoD), including instructions forautomating the activation and installation of the activation key by using IBMToolsCenter or IBM Systems Director, see the IBM Features on Demand User’sGuide at http://www.ibm.com/systems/x/fod/ under the Help section.To replace the system board, complete the following steps:1. Read the safety information that begins in Safety and “Installation guidelines”on page 36.2. Turn off the server (see “Turning off the server” on page 24) and all attachedperipheral devices. Disconnect all power cords; then, disconnect all externalcables from the server.3. Carefully turn the server on its side so that it is lying flat, with the coverfacing up.Attention: Do not allow the server to fall over.4. Unlock and remove the left-side cover (see “Removing the left-side cover” onpage 39).5. Remove the air baffle (see “Removing the air baffle” on page 41)6. Remove all fan assemblies (see “Removing the fan assembly” on page 42)7. Removing the exiting system board (see “Removing the system board” onpage 428).8. Touch the static-protective package that contains the system board; then,remove the system board from the package.9.
