Chapter 2. Configuration information and instructionsThis chapter provides information about updating the firmware and using theconfiguration utilities.Updating the firmwareThe firmware in the server is periodically updated and is available for download onthe Web. Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/ to check for the latest level offirmware, such as BIOS code, device drivers, and service processor firmware. When you replace a device in the server, you might have to either update theserver with the latest version of the firmware that is stored in memory on the deviceor restore the pre-existing firmware from a diskette or CD image.v BIOS code is stored in ROM on the system board.v The diagnostic programs are provided on the diagnostics CD.v BMC firmware is stored in ROM on the baseboard management controller on thesystem board.v Ethernet firmware is stored in ROM on the Ethernet controller.v ServeRAID firmware is stored in ROM on the ServeRAID adapter.v SATA firmware (simple-swap models) is stored in ROM on the integrated SATAcontroller.v SAS/SATA firmware (hot-swap models) is stored in ROM on the SAS/SATAcontroller on the system board.Configuring the serverThe following configuration programs come with the server:v Configuration/Setup Utility programThe Configuration/Setup Utility program is part of the basic input/output system(BIOS). Use it to change interrupt request (IRQ) settings, change thestartup-device sequence, set the date and time, and set passwords. Forinformation about using this program, see “Using the Configuration/Setup Utilityprogram” on page 16.Note: In a multi-node configuration, some choices or settings are definedthrough the primary server, and others must be defined on the individual(secondary) servers. Before you create a scalable partition, make sure thatchoices and settings on the secondary servers are correctv Boot Menu programThe Boot Menu program is part of the BIOS. Use it to override the startupsequence that is set in the Configuration/Setup Utility program and temporarilyassign a device to be first in the startup sequence.v IBM ServerGuide ™ Setup and Installation CDThe ServerGuide program provides software-setup tools and installation toolsthat are designed for the server. Use this CD during the installation of the serverto configure basic hardware features, such as an integrated SAS controller withRAID capabilities, and to simplify the installation of your operating system. Forinformation about using this CD, see “Using the ServerGuide Setup andInstallation CD” on page 24.v Baseboard management controller utility programs© Copyright IBM Corp. 2008, 2009 15
