Chapter 6. Configuration information and instructionsThis chapter provides information about updating the firmware and using theconfiguration utilities.Updating the firmwareImportant: Some cluster solutions require specific code levels or coordinated codeupdates. If the device is part of a cluster solution, verify that the latest level of codeis supported for the cluster solution before you update the code. The firmware for the server is periodically updated and is available for download onthe IBM Web site. To check for the latest level of firmware, such as the serverfirmware, vital product data (VPD) code, device drivers, and service processorfirmware complete the following steps.Note: Changes are made periodically to the IBM Web site. The actual proceduremight vary slightly from what is described in this document.1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/.2. Under Product support, click System x.3. Under Popular links, click Software and device drivers.4. Click System x3550 M3 to display the matrix of downloadable files for theserver.Download the latest firmware for the server; then, install the firmware, using theinstructions that are included with the downloaded files. When you replace a device in the server, you might have to either update thefirmware that is stored in memory on the device or restore the pre-existing firmwarefrom a diskette or CD image. The following items are downloadable at http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/:v Server firmware is stored in ROM on the system board.v IMM firmware is stored in ROM on the system board.v Ethernet firmware is stored in ROM on the Ethernet controller.v ServeRAID firmware is stored in ROM on the ServeRAID adapter.v SAS/SATA firmware is stored in ROM on the SAS/SATA controller on the systemboard.Configuring the serverThe ServerGuide program provides software-setup tools and installation tools thatare designed for the server. Use this CD during the installation of the server toconfigure basic hardware features, such as an integrated SAS/SATA controller withRAID capabilities, and to simplify the installation of your operating system. Forinformation about using this CD, see “Using the ServerGuide Setup and InstallationCD” on page 257.In addition to the ServerGuide Setup and Installation CD, you can use the followingconfiguration programs to customize the server hardware:v Setup utility© Copyright IBM Corp. 2010 255
