What your server offersThe server uses the following features and technologies:v Baseboard management controllerThe baseboard management controller provides basic service-processorenvironmental monitoring functions. If an environmental condition exceeds athreshold or if a system component fails, the baseboard management controllerlights LEDs to help you diagnose the problem.v Device Driver and IBM Enhanced Diagnostics CDThe server comes with a Device Driver and IBM Enhanced Diagnostics CD,which you can use to diagnose problems.v IBM DirectorIBM Director is a workgroup-hardware-management tool that you can use tocentrally manage System x ® servers. For more information, see the IBM Directordocumentation on the IBM Director CD.v IBM ServerGuide ™ Setup and Installation CDThe ServerGuide Setup and Installation CD that comes with the server providesprograms to help you set up the server and install a Windows operating system. The ServerGuide program detects installed optional hardware devices andprovides the correct configuration programs and device drivers. For moreinformation about the ServerGuide Setup and Installation CD, see “Using theServerGuide Setup and Installation CD” on page 55.v Integrated network supportThe server comes with two integrated Broadcom 5721 series Gigabit Ethernetcontrollers, which supports connection to a 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, or 1000 Mbpsnetwork. For more information, see “Configuring the Broadcom Gigabit Ethernetcontroller” on page 70.v Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) 2.0IPMI 2.0 support providing secure remote power-on/power-off and severalstandard alerts for components such as fans, voltage, and temperature.v Large data-storage capacity and hot-swap capabilityThe server supports up to eight 25.4 mm (1-inch) slim-high, 3.5-inch hot-swaphard disk drives in the hot-swap bays. With the hot-swap feature, you can add, remove, or replace hard disk drives without turning off the server.v Large system-memory capacityThe server supports up to 48 GB of system memory. The memory controllersupports error correcting code (ECC) for up to 12 single-sided industry-standardPC-5300, 677 megahertz (MHz), 1.8 V, 240-pin, fully buffered, double-data-rate(DDR) II, synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) dual inlinememory modules (DIMMs).v Light path diagnosticsLight path diagnostics provides LEDs to help you diagnose problems. For moreinformation, see the section about light path diagnostics in the ProblemDetermination and Service Guide on the IBM System x Documentation CD.v Memory mirroringMemory mirroring replicates and stores data in DIMMs within two branchessimultaneously. To support memory mirroring, you must have at least two pairs ofDIMMs installed (one pair in each branch). Pairs of DIMMs that are next to eachother (for example, DIMM slot 1 and DIMM slot 4) within the channels of thesame branch must be identical pairs of fully-buffered, dual inline memorymodules (DIMMs).4 IBM System x3500 Type 7977: User’s Guide
