system board. See “Removing the support bracketassembly” on page 49 and “System board internalcable connectors” on page 42 for the location of thefan cable connector.12. Reinstall the side cover, see “Installing the cover” onpage 70 for details.13. Reconnect the external cables and power cords; then, turn on the peripheral devices and the server.Installing memory modulesAdding memory to your server is an easy way to makeprograms run faster. You can increase the amount ofmemory in your server by installing options called memorymodules. Each module contains one industry-standard,dual in-line memory module (DIMM). Your server uses anoninterleaved memory configuration.Memory considerations:v The server comes with a DIMM installed on the systemboard in DIMM connector 1.v When installing additional memory modules, install thesecond memory module in DIMM connector 2, and thethird in DIMM connector 3. (See the illustration in thissection for memory connector locations.)v The xSeries 200 server supports 64 MB, 128 MB, 256MB, and 512 MB DIMMs. Your server supports aminimum of 64 MB and a maximum of 1.5 GB ofsystem memory. See the ServerProven list athttp://www.ibm.com/pc/compat for a list of memorymodules for use with your server.v Installing or removing DIMMs changes the configurationinformation in the server. Therefore, after installing orremoving a DIMM, you must change and save the newconfiguration information by using theConfiguration/Setup Utility program. When you restartthe server, the system displays a message indicatingthat the memory configuration has changed. Start theConfiguration/Setup Utility program and select SaveSettings. See Chapter 4, “Configuring the server,” onpage 33 for more information.v The illustrations in this document might differ slightlyfrom your hardware.Chapter 5. Installing options 61
