ENGLISH-13-SurroundUse this mode for films recordedusing DTS, Dolby Digital orDolby Pro Logic Surround.PhantomThis mode creates surroundsound from stereo recordings. The center channel is not usedand the surround channels havea 20-ms delay.3-Stereo ModeUse this mode to play back ProLogic-encoded films when youdo not want the surround chan-nels to play.StereoThis mode plays a recording intraditional two-channel stereo.Surround ModesThe Test Tone is used tocalibrate the volume settings ofeach of the speakers in theescXcite. It is dependent on theroom where the system is set upand the relative distances andpositions of each speaker to thelistening position. In all modes,a static-like noise will be heardcycling, in order: left front, cen-ter, right front, right surround, left surround, subwoofer. Inmodes other than DTS or DolbyDigital, the sound from the twosurrounds will be coming at thesame time, since the surroundsin all available modes, exceptDTS and Dolby Digital, are inmono. When the Test Tone isheard coming from a specificchannel, pressing the Adjust-ment +/– (11) buttons willincrease or decrease the level ofsound coming from that chan-nel. The display status-bar indi-cator (27) provides visual indi-cation of the adjustment as theadjustment is being made. Thedefault adjustment level of 0 dBis indicated by five status-barindicators illuminated. If adjustments are done in amode where a certain channel isnot available, the adjustmentstep for that channel is skipped. For example, in Phantom mode, the center-channel level cannotbe adjusted since Phantom doesnot have a center channel. Instereo, neither the center northe surround levels can beadjusted since Stereo does notfeature surround speakers or acenter speaker.Using the remote control, adjust each channel’s levelsuntil the volume of all thespeakers is the same during thetest. To make sure all channelsare properly adjusted, do thetest twice, once in Dolby Digitalor DTS (Dolby Digital or DTS isautomatically selected when theescXcite is connected to a DVDplayer playing Dolby Digital-encoded or DTS-encoded mater-ial) and once again in Dolby ProLogic.Note: The Test Tone is used tocalibrate the system to repro-duce all program materials atthe correct relative levels, aswas determined by the re-cording engineers. When listen-ing to actual surround-encodedprogram material, the volumelevel of the surround channelsis generally lower than that ofthe front channels. In fact, vir-tually all of the dialogue and asubstantial number of theeffects in a movie are re-produced through the centerchannel.Test ToneAll manuals and user guides at all-guides.com
