6FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTIONCAUTION:• Always be sure that the tool is switched off andunplugged before adjusting or checking function onthe tool.Blade guardWhen lowering the handle, the blade guard rises auto-matically. The blade guard returns to its original positionwhen the cut is completed and the handle is raised.NEVER DEFEAT OR REMOVE THE BLADE GUARDOR THE SPRING WHICH ATTACHES TO THE GUARD.In the interest of your personal safety, always maintainthe blade guard in good condition. Any irregular opera-tion of the blade guard should be corrected immediately.Check to assure spring loaded return action of guard.NEVER USE THE TOOL IF THE BLADE GUARD ORSPRING ARE DAMAGED, FAULTY OR REMOVED.DOING SO IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS AND CAN CAUSESERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY.If the see-through blade guard becomes dirty, or sawdustadheres to it in such a way that the blade and/or work-piece is no longer easily visible, unplug the saw andclean the guard carefully with a damp cloth. Do not usesolvents or any petroleum-based cleaners on the plasticguard.If the blade guard is especially dirty and vision throughthe guard is impaired, use the supplied socket wrench toloosen the hex bolt holding the center cover. Loosen thehex bolt by turning it counterclockwise and raise theblade guard and center cover. With the blade guard sopositioned, cleaning can be more completely and effi-ciently accomplished. When cleaning is complete,reverse procedure above and secure bolt. Do not removespring holding blade guard. If guard becomes discoloredthrough age or UV light exposure, contact a Makita ser-vice center for a new guard. DO NOT DEFEAT ORREMOVE GUARD.Positioning kerf boardThis tool is provided with the kerf boards in the turn baseto minimize tearing on the exit side of a cut. The kerfboards are factory adjusted so that the saw blade doesnot contact the kerf boards. Before use, adjust the kerfboards as follows:First, unplug the tool. Loosen all the screws (2 each onleft and right) securing the kerf boards. Re-tighten themonly to the extent that the kerf boards can still be easilymoved by hand. Lower the handle fully and push in thestopper pin to lock the handle in the lowered position.Loosen the knob which secures the slide poles. Pull thecarriage toward you fully. Adjust the kerf boards so thatthe kerf boards just contact the sides of the blade teeth.Tighten the front screws (do not tighten firmly). Push thecarriage toward the guide fence fully and adjust the kerfboards so that the kerf boards just contact the sides ofblade teeth. Tighten the rear screws (do not tightenfirmly).After adjusting the kerf boards, release the stopper pinand raise the handle.
