4-38 Upgrading Your SystemRemoving the System BoardCAUTIONThe system board can be extremely sensitive to ESD and always requires carefulhandling. After removing it from the system, place it component-side up on anonconductive, static-free surface to prevent shorting out the battery leads. Do notslide the system board over any surface.1. Power down the system and remove both side panels as described earlier in this chapter.2. Remove the top cover as described earlier in this chapter.CAUTIONObserve static precautions.3. Tag and remove any option boards installed.Note: The option boards must be reinstalled in the same slotswhen you reassemble the system.4. Tag and disconnect interface and controller cables connected internally to the system board.Note: Interface cables located behind the removable mediadevice bay may not be accessible until this cage is removed in Step11.5. Tag and disconnect the power cables connected to the system board.6. Tag and disconnect cables connected externally to the I/O connectors at the rear of the system.7. Tag and disconnect the front panel power and LED cables from the system board.8. Tag and disconnect the speaker cable from the system board.9. Tag and disconnect the fan cable from the system board.10. Remove the hard disk drive bay as described earlier in this chapter.11. Remove the removable media drive bay.12. Remove the screws securing the system board to the chassis.
