29Step 4 Focus and ShootThe Basics of Shooting and PlaybackB Notes About Saving Images• While images are being saved, the Number of Exposures Remaining (A 20) will blink. Do notopen the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover while images are being saved. Removingthe battery or memory card in these circumstances could result in loss of data or in damage to thecamera or card.• It may take some time for the image to be saved depending on the current settings or theshooting conditions (F11).B AutofocusThe camera may not focus as expected in the following situations. In some rare cases, the subjectmay not be in focus despite the fact that the focus area or the focus indicator glows green:• Subject is very dark• Objects of sharply differing brightness are included in the scene (e.g. the sun behind the subjectmakes that subject appear very dark)• No contrast between the subject and surroundings (e.g. a portrait subject, wearing a white shirt, isstanding in front of a white wall)• Several objects are at different distances from the camera (e.g. the subject is inside a cage)• Subjects with repeating patterns (window blinds, buildings with multiple rows of similarly shapedwindows, etc.)• Subject is moving rapidlyIn the situations noted above, try pressing the shutter-release button halfway to refocus severaltimes, or focus on another subject positioned at the same distance from the camera as the actualdesired subject, and use focus lock (A 70).B Notes About Face DetectionSee “Using Face Detection” (A 67) for more information.C When the Subject Is Close to the CameraIf the camera cannot focus, try shooting with macro mode (A 59) or the Close-up scene mode(A 43).C AF-assist Illuminator and FlashIf the subject is dimly lit, the AF-assist illuminator (A 89) may light when the shutter-release buttonis pressed halfway, and the flash (A 56) may fire when the shutter-release button is pressed all theway down.C To Make Sure You Do Not Miss a ShotIf you are concerned that you might miss a shot, press the shutter-release button all the way withoutfirst pressing it halfway.
