Using the BayStack 650/660 Wireless LAN PC Card1-4 203113-BNetwork OverviewThe BayStack PC card and BayStack access point provide freedom from networkcabling for users in an ad hoc or in an infrastructure network.Ad Hoc NetworkAn ad hoc network is a wireless, standalone network set up between two or moreworkstations without an access point. All workstations must be equipped witheither a BayStack 650 PC Card or a BayStack 660 PC Card, using peer-to-peernetwork software such as Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT. Set up anad hoc network for a specific, but temporary task. Then dissolve the network oncea task is completed.Infrastructure NetworkAn infrastructure network is the wireless portion of a network that providesaccess to a LAN with either peer-to-peer or server-based communications.Use both an access point and a BayStack PC Card to get wireless access to anexisting LAN. This could be a peer-to-peer network that is running Windows 95,Windows 98, or Windows NT; or a server-based network such as NetWare. The wireless system with the PC card must have the correct network drivers tocommunicate on the wired network. It must be configured to communicate withan access point. This is an infrastructure network, since the LAN interacts with anexisting network.
