Using the BayStack 650/660 Wireless LAN PC CardGlossary-2 203113-Bdriver software See Network driver.DSHS Direct Sequence High Speed. A physical type of wireless transmission.DSSS Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum. The radio modulation technique used bythe BayStack 650/660 Wireless LAN products. The original data stream ismultiplied by a spreading factor or “chipping” code, breaking down each databit into multiple sub-bits or chips and then transmitting and reassemblingthose chips over a frequency range much broader than the normal range of thedata stream.Ethernet address See IEEE address.ESA Extended Service Area. The wireless coverage within an area covered bydevices with the same SSID. The extended service area consists of thecombined basic service area of each BayStack 650/660 PC card. A user with amobile unit can roam within the extended service area and maintain anuninterrupted connection to the LAN.FHSS Frequency hopping spread spectrum.hop sequence The pre-set order in which frequency hopping radio transmissions from aBayStack PC card are distributed over 78 channels of the assignedtransmission band. All stations communicating with the same BayStack PCcard use the same hop sequence and synchronize their hop timing. When interference is present, it only affects a few hops. Hop sequences aredesigned so that successive hops are usually several megahertz apart.HR/DSSS High Rate Direct Sequence. Spread spectrum is 2.4GHz, per IEEE 802.11.IEEE address A unique hardware address assigned through the IEEE to each and everydevice that can be attached to an Ethernet network. This address consists ofsix hexadecimal numbers, sometimes separated by spaces or dashes, forexample, 00-34-2C-1D-69-F1. It is sometimes referred to as the hardware, network, or Ethernet address or MAC address.IEEE 802.11 standard A standard developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineersthat defines the requirements for implementation of wireless LANs.Infrastructure network A network consisting of two or more BayStack workstations and one or moreBayStack 650/660 PC cards. The wireless connection is through an PC cardthat is wired into the existing cabled network. An infrastructure networkrequires peer-to-peer network software such as Windows 95, Windows 98, orWindows NT or a server-based network such as Novell NetWare.
