Managing and Troubleshooting the Versalar Switch Router 150005-12 302768-C Rev 00Upgrading and Verifying a PROMTo upgrade or verify the software on a diagnostic or bootstrap PROM, use theprom command. You must be logged in as “Manager” to run the prom command. If a software release includes a PROM software upgrade, see the upgradedocumentation shipped with the software for instructions on upgrading thePROMs on your router.During an upgrade, the system erases the image stored in the target PROM andwrites the new image into the PROM. This process is sometimes called “burning”the PROM. To verify the image update, the system compares the contents of thenew image file to the image file in the PROM.Upgrading PROMs RemotelyBecause the operations involved in upgrading PROMs place an increased load onthe router, there is a greater chance that the PROM upgrade process will time outor fail during periods of peak traffic on your network.Follow these guidelines to ensure that the PROM upgrade is successful:• Perform the upgrade during nonpeak hours to ensure a minimum traffic loadon the router.• On systems with multiple SSP cards, upgrade the PROM for each slotseparately. Attempting to upgrade multiple slots at the same time increases theload on the backplane.Caution: If you try to update the PROM and you do not follow the PROMupdating instructions, you may disable the router.Caution: If the PROM upgrade process is interrupted, it could disable therouter.
