4 MAINTENANCEGB-184.4 ENGINE _________________________________________________________________IMPORTANT: A separate Engine Manual, prepared bythe engine manufacturer, is supplied with this tractor.Read the engine manual carefully until you arefamiliar with the operation and maintenance of theengine. Proper attention to the enginemanufacturer’s directions will assure maximumservice life of the engine. To order replacementengine manuals contact the engine manufacturer.The proper break-in of a new engine can make aconsiderable difference to the performance and life of theengine.During the break-in period, Textron Turf Care AndSpecialty Products recommends the following:1. During the first 50 hours of operation, a new engineshould be allowed to reach an operating temperatureof at least 140°F (60°C) prior to operation at full load.2. Check the engine oil level twice daily during the first50 hours of operation. Higher than normal oilconsumption is not uncommon during the initialbreak-in period.3. Change engine oil and oil filter element after first 50hours of operation.4. Check and adjust fan and alternator belts.5. Refer to Section 4.23 and Engine Manual forspecific maintenance intervals and procedures.If the injection pump, injectors or the fuel system requireservice, contact an authorized Textron Turf Care AndSpecialty Products Dealer.Note: The tractor is designed to operate and cut mostefficiently at the preset governor setting. Do not changethe engine governor settings or overspeed the engine.4.5 ENGINE OIL ______________________________________________________________Check the engine oil at the start of each day, beforestarting the engine. If the oil level is low, remove oil fillercap and add oil as required up to MAX mark on dipstick.Perform initial oil change after first 25 hours of operationand every 250 hours thereafter. See Engine Manual.Use engine oil with API classification CD-II, CE, CF-4.See Engine Manual for complete specifications.Figure 4D4.6 MUFFLER AND EXHAUST __________________________________________________To protect from carbon monoxide poisoning, inspect thecomplete exhaust system regularly and always replace adefective muffler. If you notice a change in the color orsound of the exhaust, stop the engine immediately.Identify the problem and have the system repaired.Torque all exhaust manifold hardware evenly.
