Health and Safety Information 125Understanding How Your Phone OperatesYour phone is basically a radio transmitter and receiver. When it’s turned on, it receives and transmits radiofrequency (RF) signals. When you use your phone, thesystem handling your call controls the power level. Thispower can range from 0.006 watts to 0.2 watts in digitalmode.Knowing Radio Frequency SafetyThe design of your phone complies with updated NCRPstandards described below. In 1991-92, the Institute of Electrical and ElectronicsEngineers (IEEE) and the American National StandardsInstitute (ANSI) joined in updating ANSI’s 1982 standardfor safety levels with respect to human exposure to RFsignals. More than 120 scientists, engineers andphysicians from universities, government health agenciesand industries developed this updated standard afterreviewing the available body of research. In 1993, theFederal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted thisupdated standard in a regulation. In August 1996, theFCC adopted hybrid standard consisting of the existingANSI/IEEE standard and the guidelines published by theNational Council of Radiation Protection andMeasurements (NCRP).
