Appendixes 147GlossaryLCD (Liquid Crystal Display)A visual display commonly used in consumer electronics. Thisdisplay needs a separate backlight, such as CCFL or LED, toreproduce colors.MacroThis feature allows you to capture close-up photos of very smallobjects. When using the macro feature, the camera can maintaina sharp focus on small objects at a near life-size ratio (1:1).MeteringThe metering refers to the way in which the camera measures thequantity of light to set the exposure.MJPEG (Motion JPEG)A video format which is compressed as a JPEG image.NoiseMisinterpreted pixels in a digital image that may appear asmisplaced or random, bright pixels. Noise usually occurs whenphotos are shot with a high sensitivity or when a sensitivity isautomatically set in a dark place.H.264/MPEG-4A high-compression video format established by internationalstandard organizations ISO-IEC and ITU-T and developed by theJoint Video Team (JVT). This codec is capable of providing goodvideo quality at low bit rates.Image sensorThe physical part of a digital camera that contains a photosite foreach pixel in the image. Each photosite records the brightness ofthe light that strikes it during an exposure. Common sensor typesare CCD (Charge-coupled Device) and CMOS (ComplementaryMetal Oxide Semiconductor).ISO sensitivityThe sensitivity of the camera to light, based on the equivalent filmspeed used in a film camera. At higher ISO sensitivity settings, the camera uses a higher shutter speed, which can reduce blurcaused by camera shake and low light. However, images withhigh sensitivity are more susceptible to noise.JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)A lossy method of compression for digital images. JPEG imagesare compressed to reduce their overall file size with minimaldeterioration of the image resolution.
