Appendixes 148GlossaryVignettingA reduction of an image’s brightness or saturation at the periphery(outer edges) compared to the center of the image. Vignettingcan draw interest to subjects positioned in the center of animage.White balance (color balance)An adjustment of the intensities of colors (typically the primarycolors red, green, and blue), in an image. The goal of adjustingthe white balance, or color balance, is to correctly render thecolors in an image.OIS (Optical Image Stabilization)This feature compensates in real-time for shaking and vibratingwhile shooting. There is no image degradation compared toDigital Image Stabilization feature.Optical zoomThis is a general zoom which can enlarge images with a lens anddoes not deteriorate quality of images.QualityAn expression of the rate of compression used in a digital image.Higher quality images have a lower rate of compression, whichusually results in a larger file size.ResolutionThe number of pixels present in a digital image. High resolutionimages contain more pixels and typically show more detail thanlow resolution images.Shutter speedShutter speed refers to the amount of time it takes to open andclose the shutter, and it is an important factor in the brightness ofa photo, as it controls the amount of light which passes throughthe aperture before it reaches the image sensor. A fast shutterspeed allows less time to let light in and the photo becomesdarker and more easily freezes subjects in motion.
