18 TASCAM CD-RW20004 – RecordingBefore you start recording using the CD-RW2000,make sure that you understand the following keypoints:• Once you have recorded on a CD-R disc, the datacannot be erased from it.• You can add tracks to an unfinalized recordabledisc. Once finalized, a CD-R disc is “fixed” andbehaves in the same way as a pre-recorded disc.Finalized CD-RW discs, however, can be erased, refreshed and re-recorded.4.1 Input selectionTo select the input to be recorded, press the INPUTSELECT key on the main unit 6.Repeated presses of the key cycle through the follow-ing options:In the case of the AES/EBU, coaxial or optical inputsbeing selected, the boxed DIGITAL indicator shows onthe display, and the appropriate indicator: AES/EBU,COAXIAL or OPTICAL, lights on the display. If the analog signal is selected the boxed ANALOGindicator lights on the display, together with theBALANCE indicator in the case of balanced analoginputs.4.1.1 Signal volume• The analog signals received at the ANALOG INjacks are controlled with the REC LEVEL controlsD.• Digital signal levels (from whatever the source) aswell as the level of analog signals once they havepassed through the REC LEVEL controls areadjusted in the following way:1 Press the RECORD key (J or D) to place theunit in record ready mode.2 Repeatedly press the MENU key (9 or 6)until the display shows VOLUME XXXdBwhere XXX is the current setting.3 Use the MULTI DIAL control B or the SKIPkeys H to adjust the input volume between-60dB and +18db (relative to the origi-nal input level). There is also a ---- settingwhich represents a complete signal cut.NOTEIf digital direct is selected, as described below (4.3.3,“Digital direct”), the digital volume is bypassed andthis menu item disappears. However, once the digitaldirect mode is turned off, the menu reappears, thesettings previously made here will take effect, andthe input volume may suddenly change.4.1.2 Input monitoringWhen the unit is in record ready, or record mode, theinput signal is output from the OUT jacks (digital andanalog), allowing you to hear the input signal. The meters also show the current signal level. However, it is only possible to record, or to enterrecord ready mode, when a recordable disc isinserted. To allow monitoring of the input signal atother times, or when the unit is stopped, use theMONITOR key on the remote control unit 9.The RECORD key J on the main unit will also entermonitor mode from stop mode when there is norecordable disc in the unit (when there is a recordabledisc in the unit, pressing the RECORD key entersrecord ready mode). The word MONITOR appears on the display toshow that the output signal is an echo of the inputsignal(s). The meters show the current input level.Exit the monitor mode by using the STOP key.4.1.3 Frequency conversionThe sampling frequency for CDs is 44.1 kHz. TheCD-RW2000 will always record (and play back) CDsat this frequency. However, if recording through a digital connection(either AES/EBU, coaxial or optical) and the sourcehas been recorded at a frequency other than44.1 kHz, or is being played back at a non-standardspeed using a varispeed unit (more than 0.02% awayfrom the standard), the CD-RW2000’s internal fre-quency converter can automatically convert theincoming frequency to 44.1 kHz.NOTEIf the sampling frequency convertor is turned offusing the digital direct function (4.3.3, “Digitaldirect”), recording from digitally-connected devices isonly possible when the source frequency is 44.1 kHz.If an attempt is made to record from a digitally-con-nected source at a different frequency, the error mes-sage Not Fs44.1k!is displayed.Un Bal Unbalanced analogBalance Balanced analogOptical Optical digitalCoaxial Coaxial digitalAES/EBU AES/EBU digital
