4 – Recording—Advanced recordingTASCAM CD-RW2000 212 Turn the MULTI DIAL control B or use theSKIP keys Hto change the value between DD,-24, -30, -36, -42, -48, -54,-60, -66, and -72 dB.Low numerical values of this setting (towards –24)mean that it takes a louder signal to trigger the startof the synchronized recording. A high numericalvalue (towards –72) means that a relatively quiet sig-nal will trigger the start of recording. The DD setting is a special case. It is not a signallevel, but refers to the start of a track, as encoded inthe digital input signal. It is therefore only used whena digital input is received on the COAXIAL orOPTICAL digital inputs (but not the AES/EBUinputs).NOTEIf the CD-RW2000 is used to record a digital audiosource which is connected using analog connections, even if the DD setting above is made, the triggerlevel will automatically be set to -54dB.Also note these points when making digital recordings froma CD player or a DAT player when using the DD setting.Since the DD setting pays no attention to the sound level, but only to received subcode, it is possible that when theCD-RW2000 is in record ready mode and a CD is selectedas the digital recording source, and the source CD ischanged, when the source player reads the TOC of thesource disc, when the first track is read, a spurious signalwill be sent to the CD-RW2000, which will start recording. Also, when a digitally-connected DAT is used as thesource, and the tape is wound fast (forward or backward) tocue the source tape to the start of the desired track, youshould remember that START IDs will be sent from the DATdeck while the fast wind is proceeding. These START IDswill also trigger recording if the CD-RW2000 is in recordready mode, and the DD setting is selected. For these reasons, we suggest that you only switch on theDD setting when the source CD player or DAT deck is inSTOP mode. The conditions under which an input signal is used asthe trigger to start recording are:• when recording digitally, a digital start signal isdetected, and audio is subsequently detectedor• the sound level rises above the threshold (seebelow) after having been below the threshold forone second or more. Note that the diagram belowrepresents a special case (the source is stopped orpaused) of the more general condition, as explainedlater:To start synchronized recording when the source isstopped or in pause mode:1 The unit must be in record ready mode, andthe SYNC indicator in the display must be lit, asexplained above.2 Start playing the source. The pause indicatordisappears from the display, and the unit startsrecording. The conditions under which synchronized recordingstops are:• when recording digitally, an appropriate digital sig-nal is detected. If the signal is detected from a CD,the unit enters record ready mode after 2 seconds.timelevelS_LVLStart of recordingTrack start signalreceivedtimelevelS_LVL noiselevelStart of recording
