28 TASCAM CD-RW20005 – After recordingThis section deals with the actions taken after record-ing: finalizing for CD-R and CD-RW discs, and eraseoperations for CD-RW discs.Once finalized, CD-R discs are truly final—no morecan be recorded on them. By contrast, CD-RW discscan be “unfinalized” using the CD-RW2000, i.e. theirTOC can be deleted, and if there is space, furthermaterial can be recorded on them. Even if the disc isfull, tracks can be erased following the unfinalizeprocess, and new material can be recorded.5.1 FinalizingAs has been explained earlier (1.2, “Finalizing”), inorder for a disc to become a standard CD, it musthave a Table of Contents (TOC) written to it. Thisprocess is known as finalizing. An unfinalized disc can always be distinguished onthe CD-RW2000 by the NO TOC indicator under thedisc type on the display being lit when the disc isinserted. To finalize a disc:1 With the unfinalized (recordable) disc loaded, and the unit in stop mode, press the FINALIZEkey (E or B).The display shows Finalize OK?.2 If you do not want to proceed with the finaliz-ing process, press any other key (such as theSTOP key).3 To start the finalizing process, press the MULTIDIAL control B or press the ENTER key 7.4 If finalization has been chosen, the displaychanges. The NO TOC indicator goes out, and theword TOC and the REC indicator flashes in thedisplay. The unit starts counting down from atime shown on the display (about 1 minute 10seconds).5 After finalization, a CD-RW NO TOC changes toCD-RW and a CD-R NO TOC changes to a CD.NOTEAlthough CD-R discs finalized on the CD-RW2000may be replayed on ordinary CD players, rememberthat finalized CD-RW discs may not play on CDplayers.5.1.1 Unfinalizing CD-RW discsIf a CD-RW disc has been finalized, it is possible toerase the Table of Contents in the following way:1 With the finalized disc loaded and the unit instop mode, press the ERASE key (F or C).2 If the display does not show the wordUnfinalize?, turn the MULTI DIALcontrol B or use the SKIP keys H until it isdisplayed.3 If you do not want to proceed with the unfinal-izing process, press any other key (such as theSTOP key).4 To start the unfinalizing process, press theMULTI DIAL control B or press the ENTER key7.5 If unfinalization has been chosen, the NO TOCindicator starts flashing in the display, and theword ERASE also starts flashing. The unitstarts counting down from a time shown on thedisplay (depending on the disc and material, this value will be between 50 seconds and 1minute 30 seconds).6 After unfinalization, a CD-RW indicator changesto a CD-RW NO TOC indicator.5.2 ErasingUnfinalizing (described above) is a special case oferasing a disc. It is also possible to erase a track ortracks, starting with the last-recorded track, a wholedisc, or to “refresh” a disc.NOTEErase procedures are possible only on a CD-RW disc.Even if a CD-RW disc has been finalized, selecting anerase procedure will automatically unfinalize it prior to era-sure. The disc may then have to be re-finalized. Rememberthat it is not possible to perform any erase procedures on aCD-R disc.5.2.1 Erasing tracksIt is possible to erase the last recorded track, the lasttwo recorded tracks, the last three recorded tracks, etc. It is not, however, possible to erase tracks in the“middle” of the disc.1 With the disc loaded, and the unit in stopmode, press the ERASE key (F or C).2 If the display does not show ERASE XX-XX?, where XX is the number of the lasttrack recorded on the disc, turn the MULTIDIAL control B or use the SKIP keys H untilit is displayed.
