Turn the DA-98 off andthen on again before starting recording.1.5 Recommended tapesThe DA-98 is designed for use with Hi8 videocassettes. You cannot use any other kind of tapewith the DA-98.There are two basic types of Hi8 tape: MP andME. Each has its own particular characteristicsand merits:• MP tapes are manufactured using a daubedmagnetic particle deposit process and exhibit alevel of performance which is more thanacceptable. They have a durability whichallows them to be used as work tapes in studioand post-production environments.• ME tapes have their magnetic layer producedthrough a metal evaporation process. Generallyspeaking, though these tapes have a high per-formance level, they are not as robust as MPtapes (see above) and should be used for liverecording and archival purposes, rather than aswork tapes.TASCAM does not endorse any specific tape ortape manufacturer. TASCAM has licensed the useof the DTRS logo ( ) to tape manufacturers, provided their tape meets the specificationsrequired by DTRS tape recorders. However, theuse of the DTRS logo on the tape packaging doesnot imply any endorsement of the tape by TAS-CAM. It is possible that the characteristics andsensitivities of tapes may be changed by the man-ufacturers without notice. The brands and modelnumbers of tapes listed below may not alwaysmeet the specifications required by DTRS systemsfor optimum performance. TASCAM assumes noresponsibility for problems resulting fromchanges made by a manufacturer to the materialsor specifications of its tape products. The electrical characteristics of DTRS recordersare adjusted and set using Sony Hi8 tape parame-ters (MP and ME) prior to shipment.1.5.1 Tape brandsThe following brands and models of tape can beused with the DA-98. As mentioned above, thislist does not constitute any endorsement by TAS-CAM of these products, nor is it a guarantee thattapes bearing this brand and model name will con-tinue to give optimum performance. The electronics of DTRS recorders are designedto operate within specific parameters.
