Section 2 – Front Panel controls2-4 – 1.00 – 06/97[31] TC REC switch and indicatorThis switch is used when you wish to record time-code (either internally generated or from an exter-nal source) on a dedicated subcode track of theDA-98. No audio track is needed to record time-code. For full details of timecode operation, see10, “Operations related to timecode”.[32] REW keyRewinds the tape at high speed. If this key is pressed during recording, recordingwill stop and the tape will rewind.[33] F FWD keyWinds the tape forward at high speed. If this key is pressed during recording, recordingwill stop and the tape will wind forward.[34] STOP keyCancels any current tape transport mode, andstops the tape.[35] PLAY keyStarts playing the tape. If this key pressed whilerecording is in progress, the DA-98 drops out ofrecord mode.[36] RECORD keyIf the PLAY key ([35]) is pressed while theRECORD key is held down, recording will start onall “armed” tracks (see 6.3, “Preparing torecord”).If the DA-98 is in play mode, and the REC key ispressed, recording will start immediately on any“armed” tracks. The RECORD key also is used to set punch-inpoints during auto punch-in/out operations (see6.6, “Punch-in and punch-out”).NOTEIt is not necessary to use timecode if two DTRSunits (e.g. DA-88, DA-38 or DA-98 machines) areto be operated together. The SYNC connectionswill ensure synchronization between machines(see 9.2, “Machine ID and master/slave settings”)..NOTEWhen either REW or F FWD is pressed for thefirst time after powering up, or loading a tape, theunit first configures itself for the reel hub diameterof the tape in use, during which the tape advancesat low speeds. This takes several seconds. Thereaf-ter, the transport momentarily goes into stop modebefore the tape starts fast-winding.
